From 23 March to 25 August 2024, Rockbund Art Museum (RAM) in Shanghai will present “Hu Yun: Mount Analogue“, the first exhibition of the first season of the Spring 2024 research project "Complex Geographies: China Journal". Shanghai-born artist Hu Yun is known for his unique ability to weave together personal and historical events from different times and locations to create complex narratives that demonstrate the contradictions of the established historical narrative. Over the past decade, Hu Yun has been studying historical figures who were responsible for spreading the concepts of natural history, a field that expanded globally between the 16th and 19th centuries alongside Western modernity and colonialism, influencing the exchange of goods, species, and people between Europe and its colonies.

Routes taken by naturalists for their expeditions often overlapped with colonial trade and naval expansion routes. Ports such as Shanghai emerged as vital points in this colonial and capitalist expansion. RAM is staging Hu Yun’s first museum survey: Mount Analogue, which focuses on the early natural history museum in China, the Royal Asiatic Society Museum, the original occupant of our building. The artist’s intervention across two floors of the museum highlights the violence of what he calls “expansive knowledge apparatus.” Embracing the slippage of the established history, Mount Analogue is a celebration of voices and knowledge that, by chance, escaped the processes of accumulation, classification, and categorization.

About "Complex Geographies: China Journal"

RAM‘s project "Complex Geographies: China Journal" weaves together artistic speculations, rediscovered archives, collective memories, marginalized knowledge, and vernacular fictions. It underscores the importance of the critical need to acknowledge and value the intrinsic authority of indigenous knowledge systems in deciphering complex geographical and cultural tapestries.

The Spring program starts with a series of exhibitions and public events that engage with  museum's historical architecture. Through a trio of distinct yet interconnected exhibitions  and public programs, "Complex Geographies: China Journal" invites artists, writers, and local communities to reimagine the historical functions of the R.A.S. building: an auditorium on the second floor, a library on the third, and museum spaces on the fourth and fifth floors. This artist-led inquiry will evolve in the autumn with phase two: Into the Pacific, setting the stage for subsequent programs in 2025-2026.

Hu Yun was born in 1986 in Shanghai. He graduated from China Academy of Art in 2008 and currently lives and works in Shanghai and Belgrade.

Hu Yun’s works range from graphite and watercolors to performance, video, and installation. Interested in how an individual positions him or herself within the course of history, he constructs the links that probe the inseparable coexistence of past and present, individual and public. He is adept at mobilizing various personal and historical experiences, incorporating previously produced materials into his artworks; as a consequence, it is impossible to consider any of Hu’s works in isolation since they all share a common theme, an element of foreshadowing, and they are all conceptually interconnected.

Hu Yun has participated in the 6th Singapore Biennale (2019), the 11th Gwangju Biennale (2016), the 4th Guangzhou Triennial (2012) and the 7th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale (2012). His works have also been exhibited at Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts; How Art Museum; Power Station of Art, Shanghai; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Times Museum, Guangdong and Yuz Museum, Shanghai.
