在某个时刻，海平面上升，导致大部分陆地都被海水淹没，地球上的工厂也早就已经因为海水倒灌，成了海底的景观。
人们在少的可怜的陆地上挤着，为了换取生存权，还得去出海，在海上的工厂劳作。一艘艘巨大的船舶成了海上的一个个移动工厂。
少部分地球精英已经坐上太空船移民外太空了，留下的是像李四一这种底层民众，在海上挣扎。李四一和大多数人一样，为了家人在陆地上的生存空间，签订了劳动合同，在太平洋上的一座海上半导体厂上长期进行设备维护工作。
由于海上晃动比较大，设计者在船内部加了几道隔离震动的空气轴承，即使外面大风大浪，内部的无尘室也能保持平衡，平稳运转。
李四一所在的船半导体厂子只负责一部分的工艺，如果要进行后面的工艺或者前道工艺的产品过来，则需要和其他的船进行对接。因此，船里的工厂也不是24小时有产品运转的，李四一没活的时候就在甲板上海钓，三文鱼，金枪鱼，帝王蟹……能钓上来很多，不过却是吃不了的，因为这些生物已经被污染得很严重，多种重金属超标，只能观赏一下。曾经船上有人吃过，没过两天人就直接没了。只能眼巴巴地观赏。
大概每隔一个月就会有空投的直升机过来投放一些食物干粮，他们便靠着每个月的空投度日了。
李四一忙的时候便一头扎进车间进行设备修理工作。有时候换个马达，有时候换块电路板，有时候擦擦机台，不过李四一可没有交接班的人，一个人就和他负责的机台绑定了，其他人也有负责不同的机台，各自干各自的活，厂领导为了节约成本，索性设备工艺都是一个人干了。李四一又要修机，又要负责工艺，不过工艺方便已经很成熟了，直接拿来用就行，自动化程度也算高，不必太费太多的力气。
海上的天气飘忽不定的，有时候刮风，有时候下雨，虽然这个半导体厂号称可以当潜水艇使用的，可暴风雨一来，厂房难免漏水，这时候就苦了李四一他们了，得清理厂房，当起清洁工，把每一处积水给清理干净。
也有晕船的，晕船的时候止不住地要呕吐，满甲板的呕吐物要李四一去清理干净。
每当工艺船厂对接的时候，是李四一他们最开心的时候，能够见到外人，可以私底下交换货物，可能是巧克力，可能是饼干，也可能是辣椒酱，他们在两个厂完成对接的开始进行下道工艺的时候，开始聊天，交换自己内心的想法，这时候李四一觉得自己不再只是困在一个工厂里面了，而且和其他的地方有了连接，从他们的话语中，李四一感受到其他的地方的风景，有的人能看到陆地，偷偷拿了一块泥土收藏起来给李四一看，李四一问了问，久违的泥土芬香。
李四一好久没回到陆地上了，希望陆地上的亲人好好地，李四一又像是充满电的机器，开始运转，不再想着不开心，令人抑郁的事情了……
