She Walks in Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that’s best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes:

Thus mellow’d to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

Had half impair’d the nameless grace

Which waves in every raven tress,

Or softly lightens o’er her face;

Where thoughts serenely sweet express

How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,

So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all below,

A heart whose love is innocent!

  无云的夜空,繁星闪闪;

  也在她颜面上洒布柔辉;

  显示温情伴送着芳年;

She Walksin Beauty

She Walks in Beauty is a short poem by the English poet Lord Byron. Byron is one of the most widely recognized figures of the Romantic period in English literature. The Romantics used emotion, sensation, the beauty of nature, and the power of imagination in their many writings.

Byronhas further significance as a living example of the so-called "Romantic hero" during his own lifetime. In fact, the term "Byronic hero"is now widely known. In his colorful and often scandalous life, Byron came to represent a certain type of figure during the early 1800's. This figure was the rebellious, individualistic, sensation-loving poet and traveler, who did notcare about the normal rules of social behavior. Much of Byron's verse reflected, even glorified, this character.

Although chiefly known forhis longer poems Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-1818) and the unfinished masterpiece Don Juan (1819-1824), Byron was also an accomplished writer of shorter lyrics. "She Walks in Beauty" was composed in 1814. It was written about Lady Wilmot Horton, whom the poet had met at a ball the night before. The verse was published in 1815, in the collection Hebrew Melodies Ancient and Modern.

LifeExperience

lHe was born into an ancient aristocratic family. His father was wild but irresponsible and his mother was a passionate Scots woman.

lHis father died when he was only three.Then he and his mother lived in Scotland.At the age of ten, he inherited the title of a baron and a large estate, then his mother proudly took him to England.

lHewas once educated in Cambridge. Although he was born lame, he was good at sports. Hours of Idleness《闲暇时光》, published in 1807, collected many ofhis previous poems. A very harsh review of this work in the Edinburg Review prompted a satirical reply from Byron in Heroic couplets, entitled EnglishBards and Scotch Reviewers(1809).《英国诗人和苏格兰评论家》

lIn1811, he took his seat in the House ofLords, and made vehement speeches, attacking the reactionary policy and showing his great sympathy for the oppressed poor.

lIn1812, the first two cantos of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage恰尔德 哈洛尔德游记》were published and made the poet famous overnight. In 1815, Byron got married to AnnaIsabella Milbanke. A year later, his wife left him and refused to come back.

lRumors about his incestuous relationship with his half-sister and doubts about his sanity led to his being abused and decried. In anger and disgust, Byron left England and never came back.

lInthe summer of 1816 he settled in Switzerland, with his personal physician. InGeneva, he wrote thethird canto of Childe Harold andthe narrative poem The Prisoner of Chillon《锡隆的囚徒》.

lDon Juan唐 璜》,mock epic in16 cantos, was finished in 1823.

lIn 1823, Byron joined in the Greek national independent wars against Turkey. In 1824, he died from months of hard work and illness. The whole Greek nation mourned over his death.

Literary Achievements

lIt is the poem that brought its authorfame. Byron then said: “

I awoke one morning and found myself famous.”

lThe hero of this poem is the surrogate 替代of the poet himself. The poem is about a gloomy, passionate young wanderer who escaped from the society he disliked and traveled around the continent, questioning for freedom

lDon Juan 《唐璜》a comic epic

Muchof Byron's longer narrative verse, which he often composed speedily, is loose and even slapdash in its construction. This lyric, by contrast, has a polishand a calm poise that reflect the lady it describes. Using an iambic rhythm,which consists of alternating stressed and unstressed syllables, the verse paystribute to its unnamed lady of beauty. She is like the night, rather than"gaudy day," in her gentle beauty as well as her serene manner. Her attributes are likened to perfection: "one shade the more, one ray theless" would change the ideal arrangement of graceful qualities. But most importantly, her beauty is not just an external, superficial thing, but a reflectionof her inner beauty. The speaker's vision renders her external qualities" eloquent"-she comes to represent for him an essential"goodness."

The speaker in Byron's shorter lyrics is a much more public, conventional figure than the"Byronic hero" of the narrative poems. "She Walks inBeauty" is the sort of verse, unlike so much of Byron's highly charged longer verse, that could be recited or sung to guests in society. But knowing what we do of Byron's own tormented and scandal-ridden personal life, we can perhaps read envy in his glimpse of "A mind at peace with all below/ Aheart whose love is innocent."

Maid of Athens! I am gone:

Think of me, sweet! when alone.

Byronic Hero

Byronic Hero: It is often a proud, mysterious rebel figureof noble origin. Hecarries on his shoulders the burden of righting all the wrongs in a corrupt society and would rise single-handedly against any kind oftyrannical ruleseither in government, in religion, or in moral principles with unconquerable wills and in exhaustible energies.
