WASCZ | Our Rowing Triumphs

After participating in the Henley Royal Regatta in June this year, WASCZ's rowers had a rare opportunity to compete again. With the opening ceremony marked by unpredictable drizzles and strong winds, Rowing Coach Ms Zhang reassured everyone, stating, "Weather is always a factor in rowing, but for our professionally trained rowers, its impact is minimal." Her words set the tone for confidence and resilience.

In a show of solidarity, the WASCZ Choir, known for their harmonious performances, stood on stage with their competitors, providing a musical backdrop to the event. One of our international scholars joined the choir, embodying the spirit of togetherness. "Singing together reflects our community spirit and commitment to giving back," Ms Jackson shared.

The day held more than just racing; it marked a key milestone. Mr Yuan Bo, Board Director & Vice President of Wycombe Abbey Schools, signed a strategic cooperation agreement with ZhongSai (Changzhou) Sports Development Co., Ltd. on behalf of WASCZ. This exciting partnership promises to bring new and thrilling opportunities to our sports programmes, sparking anticipation for the future.

As the event began, rain created unpredictable conditions on the water. Raindrops slicked the oars as gusts stirred ripples across the river. But our teams were ready. Warm-ups were extended, and final strategies were adjusted. 

Competing in the 4,000-metre Adult Elite Division, Mr William Vanbergen and coaches Ms Zhang and Mr Frieh demonstrated exceptional teamwork and power. Their efforts paid off, securing the championship in a stunning display of coordination and resilience.

"It's tough, but it's great for our teamwork," Mr Vanbergen reflected, extending well-wishes to the student teams about to compete. "Enjoy the sensation; you're not just rowing for yourself but for your teammates."

As the whistle signalled the Junior category race, the rain intensified. Grade 11 student and team leader Ms Lv, a record-holder for many of WASCZ's rowing events, led her team with unwavering determination. Despite the slippery conditions, the team synchronised their strokes and gradually gained speed, rowing with their muscles and hearts.

The achievement on the water was the result of rigorous preparation. WASCZ rowers, with their unwavering dedication, rise before dawn three times a week, balancing intensive training with their academic commitments. This level of commitment is a source of pride for our school community. Our goal extends beyond developing outstanding athletes – we aim to foster independence, resilience, and a strong sense of responsibility, qualities that are integral to our educational ethos.

Though the competition brought some challenges, victory was not the sole measure of success. Each stroke embodied a spirit of unity, resilience, and persistence.

Executive Headmaster Mr David Aitchison commended the students,emphasising the importance of resilience and the deep bonds forged through teamwork, inspiring us all with their achievements.

Beyond the water, an art exhibition-themed "Environment" showcased the creativity of WASCZ's students. While some pursued glory on the river, others expressed their aspirations through vibrant colours and artistic compositions. This juxtaposition of athleticism and artistry is a testament to the diverse talents of our students, inspiring us all with their achievements.
