小时候的李四一大概是无忧无虑的，也是野蛮生长的，父母和广大劳苦大众一样，是一对农民工，靠着每天早出晚归骑着一辆破旧的摩托车在工地里干活，粉刷墙壁，砌砖，搅拌水泥，来补贴家用。因此对李四一的管教也比较少了，父母每天辛苦的劳作后，也已然没有了精力去管教孩子，更别说辅导学习了。
到了初中的时候，李四一开始变得不爱上课，不爱学习，终日在游戏的厮杀中获得存在感，每天不是翘课去网吧上网就是在课堂上补觉。恰逢古惑仔电影的流行，李四一也想和他们一样，做个威风的社会大哥，终于李四一威风了一次，把一个高年级的大学生打了，随之而来的结果便是父母过来赔偿医药费，校长的开除通知。李四一的母亲跪下来求校长，校长把他的母亲扶起来，还是拒绝了她的请求，毕竟人是的为自己所做过的事付出的。
母亲也只好把李四一往家里领，家里想方设法地给李四一找了个当地模具厂学徒的工作让李四一去学学技术，学学怎么操作机床，做机械零件。可没过两天，李四一又和厂里的师傅闹矛盾，被师傅赶出了厂。
家里想让李四一跟着干工地，可李四一怎么能弯地下腰，去干工地呢。家人无奈，给了李四一一笔钱，让他买张车票去广东打工了。
李四一收拾好行李便买了张票去广东，那边有个父亲的熟人，在一家工厂打螺丝，他的目的地便是那里。到了地方他便联系熟人，可那个人说他已经不在工厂上班了，劝他去干更加有钱途的活。李四一一问，是什么工作？
是在赌场里做放贷工作人员，一天能有200块钱呢！李四一一听，一天两百，还挺多的嘛。便答应了。他们的工作就是在地下赌场巡视，腰里跨着一个包，里面装着现金，遇到没钱赌博的人，放贷给他们。赌场里鱼龙混杂，烟味，槟榔味有点呛，也有喝酒的。昏黄的灯花下，是贪婪的赌徒油光满面的脸。
