Laura Sachs
Laura Sachs (b. 1985) is a contemporary German artist who explores the boundaries between painting and object in her reduced, abstract works. She initially studied philosophy and art in Frankfurt am Main and completed her studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 2018 as a master student.
Sachs’works are characterized by precise and balanced compositions. They are a constant interplay of contrasts, whether between materiality, color, letting go and control, intention and intentionlessness. Yet despite these contrasts, Sachs’works radiate an incredible calm and meditative quality.
One of the most distinctive characteristics in her works is the interaction between the artwork and space. The artist skillfully merges painting and object by combining the canvas with accurately placed metal pieces, sometimes directly on the canvas, sometimes offset at the edge of the painting. These act as “equal interlocutors”, challenging and enriching the work and turning the canvas into a three-dimensional object. In this way, Sachs’paintings always enter into a dialog with their surroundings and influence the viewer’s perception.

Laura Sachs’ art is the result of a continuous exploration of materiality and a constant search for the right balance. The meditative quality of her works invites the viewer to pause and immerse themselves in the subtle nuances of the compositions. By pushing the boundaries of painting and object, Sachs develops artworks that encourage reflection and dialog – both with oneself and with the environment around one.
When did you start working as an artist and why?
Laura Sachs:
I was interested in drawing and painting from an early age and later became fascinated by various materials. During my time at school, I developed a desire to work independently and the idea of working in a studio. After graduating from high school, I tried out other things and ultimately found my way back to my artistic work by rejecting these paths. I wanted to create something concrete myself and get to the point with my work. That's basically what drives me to this day.
Who or what has influenced you?
Laura Sachs:
Basically, I was inspired by people who went their own way, found alternative approaches and did what fulfilled them. When I was at school, I was most interested in art lessons. I developed an interest in the Abstract Expressionists and the Minimalists. In Frankfurt am Main, I studied philosophy and art at state examination level. In Michael Jäger's painting class at the time, I realized that I was serious about art and so, after graduating, I began studying at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf.
What do you want to achieve with your art? What do you want to express?
Laura Sachs:
My fundamental concern is painting and the question of its materials, which I negotiate again and again. The interface and interaction of color and material occupy me just as much as the search for clarity and finding the right point between too much and too little, in terms of proportion and technique.
In concrete terms, I treat the canvas and the picture support as self-sufficient materials and deal with their specific characteristics. However, I am equally concerned with the different views and perspectives of the canvas, because the apparent“flat picture”acts for me like an all-viewing object. The edges, corners and the back, which is hidden from the viewer, form the picture just as much as the frontal view. A work is thus composed of many views and diverse materialities.
