It's messy and it contains many layers
These layers may seem wrong to the world
But to me they are beautiful
—Mary Pat Wallen
Sculptures by Indiana native Mary Pat Wallen (b. 1963) are influenced by her “own reflections of human struggles and the need to achieve balance”. These sculptures, predominantly crafted from bronze or resin,“convey grace amongst the rust and corrosion of humanity and demonstrate a controlled chaos - a yin and a yang.”Wallen has the rare ability to be ambiguous regarding gender, race, and other characteristics that are often immediately identifiable in a piece of art. With many sculptures created on a commissioned, site-specific basis, her works easily harmonize with the surrounding environments.
Many artists start by creating a sculpture out of reusable clay. They then take this clay creation and apply a rubber mold over the clay, followed by a plaster mold over the rubber. This plaster mold allows the artist to make multiple pieces by brushing wax onto the mold to create duplicate sculptures out of wax.

Mary Pat Wallen
Mary Pat Wallen
Mary Pat Wallen work portrays her personal journey through life. It is messy. It consists of multiple layers of what the world might see as mistakes, but Mary Pat Wallen see as beauty. It is seeing the beauty among the rust and corrosion of humanity.... viewing the holes or rusty crevices not as decay, but as opportunities to let your soul shine. Mary Pat Wallen like to call it controlled chaos, the yin and the yang, or better yet, her wabi sabi moment!
