Ida Vikfors is a Finnish artist, now living in Sweden with a background as a pattern designer and artisan in textiles and sewing. Ida’s works have a minimalist expression with a focus on creating different dimensions, allowing the viewer to explore shapes and shadows that change over time, depending on the light or a person’s mood. Her work appears tactile and almost a bit fragile, though it is a rough and long-lasting surface.

When Ida Vikfors creates art, she needs to be calm from the inside out. Meditation is good for Ida Vikfors to find that creative state. When Ida Vikfors is stressed and has a lot to do, or when she needs to deal with things that have already happened, Ida Vikfors often gets ideas. But Ida Vikfors carefully collects all these ideas and makes small samples, so when Ida Vikfors finds the most creative mindset, she gets inspired by it. The end result may be completely different, but it's an important part of the process.

Since Ida Vikfors was very young, she has been creating in some way or another.Ida Vikfors has worked with many different materials and techniques, always exploring new ways of doing things. Ida Vikfors has never had a plan for her artwork, it comes naturally to Ida Vikfors. This series of artworks is an expression of her experiences with her own mind, where she creates a space for spectators to find solid ground, as we all need a place to feel safe and to find stillness. Sculptural lines in her works create a surface and depth that changes depending on the incidence of light, resulting in simple pieces that bring a level of curiosity and complexity.
Q1：你作品的视觉外观是极简和宁静的。你的标志性风格背后的理念是什么？
The visual appearance of your works is minimalist and tranquil. What is the philosophy behind your signature style?
IV：我的作品是在提醒观者要活在当下。这些作品很谦虚，需要稍加留意才能彰显个性。根据光线的反射，不同的色调和阴影创造出雕塑般的线条，形成了一个宁静的表面。这些作品看起来触感良好，几乎有点脆弱。与坚硬的表面并置，这在材料的真实属性和它被感知的方式之间产生了张力。这是我喜欢的，也是我想让观众体验到的。
My works are a reminder to the viewer to be present. The pieces are modest and need a bit of attention to reveal their personality. Depending on the reflections of light, different shades and shadows create sculptural lines that form a surface that is restful to behold. The works appear tactile and almost a bit fragile. In juxtaposition to the tough surface, that creates tension between the true properties of the material, and how it is being perceived. That is the thing that I love and that I want the viewer to experience.
Q2：作为一名生活在瑞典的芬兰艺术家，尽管两国地理位置相近，但你认为两国在艺术表达和欣赏方面存在差异吗？
As a Finnish artist living in Sweden, do you see a difference in artistic expression and appreciation between the two countries, despite being geographically close?
IV：艺术界对我来说是一个新的地方，我还没有获得足够的经验来看到我们两个国家看待艺术的明显差异。当然，历史上有许多方面影响了人们对艺术的看法，我想谨慎地说，芬兰人的偏好更谦虚一些，而瑞典人对不同风格和变化的态度要开放得多。对我来说，北欧设计的极简主义表达不仅仅是它的外观，而是你如何将它融入你的生活方式。因此，我希望我的作品能够成为我们今天所需要的静谧生活的一部分。
The artworld is a new place for me, and have yet to acquire enough experience to see an obvious difference in how we look at art between the two countries. Historically there are of course many aspects that have impacted how art is perceived, and I would prudently like to say that the Finns tend to be a bit more modest in their preferences, while in Sweden there is a much more open mind for different styles and variations. To me, the minimalist expression of Nordic design is not just the way it looks, but rather about how you involve it in your lifestyle. With that, I hope that my works can be a part of the stillness that so many of us need today.
Q3：你的主要灵感来源是什么？
What is your main source of inspiration?
IV：从很小的时候起，我就对纹理、表面和材料着迷。直到今天，我仍然认为在探索材料时使用我的手，而不是我的眼睛，对我来说非常重要。我不会说我在寻找灵感时有什么特定的东西，但我发现建筑和日常环境中的元素都能激发我的灵感。
Ever since I was little, I’ve been fascinated by textures, surfaces and materials. To this day I still consider employing my hands, rather than my eyes when exploring materials, very important to me. I would not say that there is any specific thing that I look for in search of inspiration, but I find elements in architecture and everyday surroundings inspiring.
