Summer classes are an opportunity to get ahead in coursework or explore a new interest. CMU offers summer classes in person and remotely. The Summer II session begins on Monday, June 24, and the last date to register is Friday, June 28. Financial aid, time commitment, and the desire to take summer classes are great discussion topics to have with your student.

Fall Checklist

Here are some helpful action items your student can complete over the summer to prepare for the fall semester. As a reminder, CMU staff work over the summer and are available to support your student.

• Update student information: Have your student review their Student Information Online* and My Plaid Student*. Summer is a great time for students to update their family members’ address(es), email, emergency contact, and permission to access financial and academic information.

• Complete CMU Health Insurance Open Enrollment: Returning students need to complete the annual student insurance Open Enrollment between July 1 and Aug. 23. It is an annual requirement for students to either enroll in the CMU Student Health Insurance Plan or apply to waive it; enrollments and waivers do not carry over each year. Students will receive detailed communications via email about the insurance requirements and instructions in June. Check the University Health Services webpage for updates*.

• Check out the Carnegie Mellon University Bookstore*: Consider the bookstore for back-to-school needs. The bookstore offers educationally-priced computers and peripherals from Apple, Dell, and more (ask about special orders), along with all-new CMU apparel, gifts, flags, stickers, art and regular supplies, diploma frames, and local Pittsburgh items. There's always something new at CMU Stores!

• Plan your travel for Family Weekend: Family Weekend is Sept. 27-28. Programming begins on Friday afternoon. Hotel and travel information is available on the Family Engagement webpage*.

Move-In

There are a few things your student can do during the summer break to prepare for move-in this fall. Here is some helpful information for students who will be living on- or off-campus:

• On-Campus: Move-In for all Upper-Class students, including fraternity and sorority residents, is Aug. 21-25. All residents are required to sign up for a move-in timeslot on the housing portal in mid-July. The early arrival request will be available from July 14-Aug. 16 in the housing portal* and must be submitted at least three business days in advance of the requested date.

• Off-Campus: Students should refer to their lease agreement with their landlord about their move-in date. The Housing Services Off-Campus Housing Marketplace* is a great resource for students who need help finding a roommate, tenant resources, or rental properties in the area.

• Volunteer for Move-In: CMU is looking for volunteers to assist with First-Year Move-In on Saturday, Aug. 17. If your student is interested in this opportunity, they should sign up by July 10*. Volunteers are permitted to return to campus early.

Career Corner

The Career & Professional Development Center (CPDC)* encourages students to maximize their summer break and get ahead on their career journey. Many students pursue internships, invaluable experiences that teach students how to navigate the “real world” and develop professional skills that can only be experienced in the workplace.

If your student does not have an internship, there are still many activities they can do to enhance their career, such as engaging in research projects, volunteering, taking online professional development workshops and certifications, and networking with alumni via CMUniverse. By proactively utilizing their summer break, students can boost their career readiness and pave the way for future success!

The CPDC is open all summer (M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET), so encourage your student to book a virtual or in-person appointment with their dedicated Career Consultant if they have any career-related questions.
