Ph.D. student Kimi Wenzel and Associate Professor Geoff Kaufman from the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University have conducted a study on the challenges faced by users of voice assistants, particularly those without a standard American accent. They identified six potential harms caused by voice assistant errors and proposed strategies to mitigate these issues. Their groundbreaking work, which won a Best Paper award at the Association for Computing Machinery’s Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, is part of a larger research project aimed at understanding and documenting the biases embedded in technology.

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is launching the CyLab Venture Network, a program designed to support startups in the security and privacy industry. The network aims to connect founders with venture investors, corporate partners, academics, and government officials. The initiative is a response to the high demand for partnerships with CMU security and privacy startups. The network will launch with 20 startups across various sectors and stages. Two VC firms, 412 Venture Fund and DataTribe have joined as investor partners. The network will also provide opportunities for CMU faculty, research staff, and students, including internships, job opportunities, and exposure to corporate and startup partners. The goal is to inspire more students and faculty to create cybersecurity startups and help existing startups in the network become more successful.
