Carnegie Mellon's hacking team, the Plaid Parliament of Pwning (PPP), won their third consecutive DEF CON Capture the Flag title, making it their eighth overall. They collaborated with CMU alumnus and University of British Columbia Professor Robert Xiao's team, Maple Bacon, and hackers from the CMU alumni startup Theori (The Duck), playing under the name Maple Mallard Magistrates (MMM). Despite early challenges, they triumphed over 11 top teams in this highly regarded cybersecurity competition. DEF CON's CTF, regarded as the "Olympics" of hacking, tests the world's best in cybersecurity. PPP's success is rooted in their teamwork and passion, contributing significantly to Carnegie Mellon's leading role in cybersecurity education.

Carnegie Mellon University researchers are codesigning the future of transit with people who operate buses and other mass transit vehicles. In collaboration with the Amalgamated Transit Union, Transport Workers Union, and the AFL-CIO’s Technology Institute, Sarah Fox and Nikolas Martelaro, assistant professors at CMU’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute, are working to understand the impacts of autonomous technology on transportation workers’ jobs. This partnership aims to enhance public transportation through advanced data analytics and AI, optimizing route planning, reducing delays, and improving service. The initiative represents a major step toward modernizing mass transit and addressing the need for smarter, more sustainable urban mobility solutions.
