Yue Minjun (born 1962, Daqing) graduated from Heibei Normal University in 1989. He is a major figure of the Cynical Realism movement, known for his iconic ‘laughing man’. This image illustrates the irony and boredom of Chinese society during the rise of consumerism and economic reform in the early 1990s. Yue lives and works in Beijing.

A pigeon whistle is a type of whistle installed at the tail of a pigeon, which makes a sound when the pigeon flies. As a traditional folk culture, the culture derived from Beijing's pigeon whistle is closely related to the history of the city.

The pigeon whistle has become a memory of the times, a public memory. Hearing the whistle of pigeons come and go is like standing under the gates of an old alley, basking in the sun, blowing cold and hot wind on an autumn afternoon in Beijing, dry but comfortable.

The work "Pigeon Whistle" is a transformation of such a public memory about Beijing to another equally ancient British town. The town is shrouded in the water vapor brought by the temperate oceanic climate, and the sound of rustling pigeon whistles is both familiar and chaotic. Viewers with such public memories walk through medieval arches and hear these pigeon whistles, the alleys they ran through in their childhood are stacked on the marble church promenade, as if this was the place they used to play in.

Liu Yaohua (China), born in Shanxi in 1982, graduated from university in 2008 with a degree in architecture. He has worked in artist Ai Weiwei's studio in Beijing. As an artist, he works in a variety of mediums and presents anti-visual conceptual tendencies. In addition, as a curator, he has initiated and curated several art projects and exhibitions in China.

A breath is the smallest unit of human behaviour to sustain life.

And a sigh is a breath.

Sighing is a language beyond semantics, and sighing is also an action.

This is a black CD recorded by the artist in China, in which he recorded a sigh in the studio. This work has no fixed way of displaying, but can be extended in various ways according to different contexts.

Penghang Liu is an artist based in London. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in the Experimental Art department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2021, he moved to the UK to continue his studies and received his Master’s degree in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art in 2023.

Penghang Liu’s art practice explores human emotions and existence. It examines the missing and lost parts of our life, which have left traces in our memory and drive us to return to then repeatedly, consciously or unconsciously.

By introducing the concept of light, he focuses on the visible but immaterial attributes of light, which make it equivalent to the nature of the things lingering in our memories: we can feel their presence in the depths of our minds, but they can never be touched. 

Light can always attract people’s gaze and lead their eyes to a specific area. But this area is also an illusionary space – This parallels that classical Greek tale of the painting competition between Zeuxis and Parrhasius. When Zeuxis attempted to open the curtain on Parrhasius’ painting, he discovered that the curtain was part of the painting itself. From this point, my practice explored the problem of image and representation – Does the truth always lie beneath the veil of the image, and can it only be glimpsed by finding a gap on the image? But isn’t this truth simply another illusion? Just as dreams reveal the truth of our desire, but dreams are also another form of illusion.

Exploring the sad beauty among the things cannot be touched, his research interests also include Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalysis theory, especially the concept of ‘lack’, which is like a void area in our being: our desire is produced from here, as a vain and illusionary complement for this void. He combined it with the concept of ‘emptiness’ in Eastern philosophy, to reinterpret the tangled relation between ‘truth’ and ‘illusion’.

Chen Wenxuan lives and works in London. He graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2022 and from the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2019. Chen Wenxuan often uses natural symbols as a language to create installations and videos. He re-examines and metaphorizes the relationship between nature and industrialization, and constructs a surreal symbolic world through simulacrum and generation.

Sihan Ling is a Chinese artist Base in UK. His practice is rooted in the dialogues and translation between different cultures in the context of globalisation. In this nebula of concerns, he is keen on exploring viewers’ new forms of empirical knowledges deriving from such cultural exchange. The form of his works oscillates between installations, video essay, performance and dialogical art. He often reconstructs the cultural reference through altering the original formats of familiar object in poetic and absurd ways. 

Li Yu graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2020 and Slade School of Art, University of London in 2023. Her work uses sculpture, performance, concrete poetry, and sound installations as mediums. Li Yu’s current research focuses on the rules within linguistics to critique and reflect on the boundaries of expression and thought, as well as the formation of common knowledge. 

Jiayu zhang is a Chinese artist and graduated from Slade school of art in 2023.

Yuukihoriuchi is from Japan and  graduated from Slade school of art in 2023.

Diogo Gama (Almada, 1998) lives and works in London where he graduated from the MFA Fine Art  from Goldsmiths University of London in 2022.

It is a project that discusses action, space, mobility. Artists would take their "suitcases" from where they lived (maybe London, or a city in China, or a city in Europe) to a small town in Wales that they didn't know about, Ruthin, and eventually collide with the spatial field of this town. The artists create based on the information provided about the small town of Ruthin, place their works in suitcases, and finally arrive in the town to transfer their works into the urban sculpture landscape of this town, in order to explore the question of the artist's identity, the state of uncertainty - the suitcase as a symbol that can move at any time, but also has its multiple constraints, that is, the restraint in motion and the release after arriving at the destination. This state of affairs is a portrayal of the general life of artists.
