Adam E. Holton

Adam E. Holton,Found Out There - Public Typist《公共打字员》,威尔士

About the Artist and Work

As an author I have self-published two novels – Witness and The First Juniper Tree. Both are works of narrative philosophy and both include original piano music. More information is available via https://foundoutthere.com

As a Public Typist I improvise stories on a typewriter in public spaces. Each story is roughly a side of A5 in length and is inspired by the three words and a name I am given by members of the public.

As a Facilitator I host Stranger Stories events. These are a mix of mingling with people, against the clock word games, creating short stories with strangers and the magic of sharing them out loud.

As a Public Typist I improvise stories on a typewriter inspired by the words people give me. I ask you to give me three words, one name and five minutes of your time. I type the story and it's yours to take away.

I do this in public to create a space where you can be curious and playful. I hope it also serves as a reminder that being open to the unexpected can be fun.

Each story is unique and typed on a pay what you feel basis.

CHEN Shuyu

“Walk Through Love”

"Walk Through Love" is a performance art piece that integrates community engagement, cultural exchange, and historical significance.

Location and Participants: The performance unfolds in Ruthin, involving two residents—an elderly person and a child aged 6-8 years old—alongside the artist. Starting at St Peter Church, a prominent landmark in Ruthin, the journey concludes at Ruthin Library.

Symbolism of Love: As the trio walks together, they follow a winding route through the town, tracing the path to form the Chinese character for "LOVE" in cursive calligraphy style on the map of Ruthin. This character draws inspiration from the calligraphy of Zhao Mengfu from the Ming Dynasty, resonating with the historical context of Ruthin Castle's construction period.

Community Engagement Through Song: Throughout the walk, the elderly participant and the child take turns singing local Welsh-Ruthin children's songs, and the artist contributes by singing children's songs from the Ming Dynasty. The purpose of this musical element is to attract people to join the procession, fostering a sense of unity and shared experience.

Integration of Public and Private Spaces: The route intentionally passes through both public and private buildings, symbolizing the interconnectedness of outdoor and indoor environments. This gesture reinforces the theme of walking through spaces with love and fostering a sense of belonging within the community.

Timing and Duration: The performance takes place after lunch on the opening day and is designed to last around 20 minutes, to finish the two strokes of LOVE in Chinese, creating a brief yet impactful experience for participants and observers alike.

Documentation: The walking path is traced using a mapping app, and a drone records footage of the procession from above. This documentation preserves the ephemeral nature of the performance and allows for reflection and sharing of the experience beyond its immediate context.

Zhuyang Liu/Francis Moore

他已经在伦敦举办了三年的“musicking_event”活动。

About the Artist and Work

Lanyun Huang

As a mixed-media artist, Lanyun is currently studying Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Her artistic practice mainly involves sound, imagery, and performance. The themes of her work primarily revolve around queer sexuality, identity politics, and the relationship between art and commerce. Besides her artistic practice, Lanyun is also a performer (experimental music, fire dancing, and movement), as well as an event organizer. She has established event labels “FlowFinch” and art community “Assembling” in both Guangzhou and London.

Zhuyang Liu

Zhuyang, currently enrolled in Fine Arts at University College London, is a mixed-media artist. Her practice encompasses dynamic imagery, sound, text, oral expression, and mixed-media performance. Having received training in traditional Chinese instruments (guqin, guzheng, and one-stringed fiddle) since childhood, Zhuyang excels in blending traditional techniques with experimental music and possesses extensive performance experience.

Francis Moore

Francis graduated from Goldsmiths College with a degree in Curating. Currently, he is a performer and music event organizer based in London. His instrumental performances often carry traditional flavors, such as Welsh and Scottish bagpipes, Japanese shakuhachi, and Chinese dizi. He has hosted the "Musicking" (@musicking_event) event in London for three years.

The artists will arrive in Ruthin Town in advance to collect highly representative local sounds and process them for creative reuse. Subsequently, these processed sounds will serve as the foundational audio for the artworks (e.g., market auction sounds). At the exhibition venue, the artists will construct participatory sound installations, encouraging and guiding other artists and audience members to engage in spontaneous sound creation. Furthermore, as a mobile interactive installation, the artwork will continuously be moved to various public areas in Ruthin Town, encouraging people to participate in the creative process.

In Elsewhere

Participants involved in Y Cylch Somatic can be primarily categorized into three identities: artists, outsiders (non-local participants/tourists/other artists), and locals of Ruthin Town. However, regardless of their identity or origin, within Y Cylch Somatic, they all are to some extent strangers, all endowed with the perspective of being an outsider.

The Welsh term "Cylch" (Circle) points towards an egalitarian community. "Somatic" refers to the bodily, emphasizing immediate bodily responses in the creative process, distinct from mental and conscious processing.

Simultaneously, the artist Lanyun will integrate field research and collected soundscapes into their performative language, interacting with participants during the exhibition period: providing improvised responses to the sounds emitted by the participants.

A Moving Plan《

Final presentations are worked on intensively from a vast selection of photographs, exploring innovative ideas and concepts, and incorporating an essential need to surprise myself at every stage. I hope to extract and reintroduce almost human and refined form from everyday objects. It does not matter what is. What matters is what we see.

This is a collaboration between Chinese artist Liu Jialing and British artist Brendan, which started from a conversation about their different locations: Brendan A. Linane lives in London, Liu Jialing in Beijing.A Moving Plan of his place refers to the fact that people always have a plan to move on the earth, and the whole process of life is to keep moving in time and space. A Moving Plan has a short plan, an extended plan, an actual plan, and a dream plan, so the artist would like to collect everyone's moving plan to make a moving plan picture, comparing the exact image with the dream picture to see what kind of difference exists between the actual picture and the dream picture, and whether there exists some type of law. Is there a pattern? Participants only need to answer a few questions: where do you come from? Where do you plan to go in the short term? Where do you dream of going? (Where have you always aspired to?) If you are willing to write your story, name, gender, age, etc., feel free to play in the margins.

Richard DeDomenici

Carioci(威尔士语发音:[kae . ri[]]) 意为“卡拉ok”。

About the Artist and Work

Richard DeDomenici is an artist of complicated international descent who specialises in absurdist interventions that strive to create the kind of uncertainty that leads to possibility.DeDomenici’s 2015 adaptation of The Redux Project for BBC4 was called ‘one of the smartest, strangest, subversive half hours of television I have ever seen’ by critic Matt Truman.Richard’s installation Shed Your Fears debuted at Tate Modern in 2017. When Eurovision was cancelled in 2020 DeDomenici organised the zero-budget Coronavision Song Contest instead. The contest was recently acquired for posterity by the British Library.Richard has performed in over 30 countries, most recently at the Digital Wild InternationalBiennale For Art & Technology in Trondheim.Richard believes that art is at its most powerful when experienced by non-art audiences.Richard DeDomenici is one eighth North Welsh, and lived in Wales for three years when he studied at Howard Gardens School of Art in Cardiff.

Caer (Welsh pronunciation: [kɑːɨr]) meaning "stronghold", "fortress", or "castle"Carioci (Welsh pronunciation: [kæ.ɹiˌəʊ.ki]) meaning "karaoke"Artist and karaoke enthusiast Richard DeDomenici invites you to an early evening karaoke party at Ruthin Castle. The event will launch Richard's labour-of-love project to make karaoke versions of songs by the first Welsh-language boyband Mega. DeDomenici vividly remembers seeing Mega perform live at a recording of the S4C show iDot, in a warehouse in Splott in the late 1990's. Their performance had a big impact on him, and influenced his decision to form his own boyband in 2006. Sadly Mega only released one album (Mwy Na Mawr, 1998) and split up in the year 2000. Richard hopes that releasing karaoke versions of Mega's songs a quarter of a century later will help cement the boyband's legacy. Moreover, DeDomenici aims to expand the project into a wider campaign to raise awareness of the power of karaoke to improve international language skills, promote literacy, and preserve potentially vulnerable dialects. Free drink for all participants!

About the Artist and Work

Born in Beijing in 1985. She received her MA in Fine Arts in 2011 from MaHKU in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Her work engages with found materials and situations triggered through encounters with people and places.

Since the pandemic, face-to-face interactions have been replaced by monologues on social media in the form of text or sound. During the festival, volunteers are invited to whisper contents extracted from my private messages on WeChat to random strangers they encounter in the public space of Ruthin as they go about their daily lives. Whoever happen to come across such a message is welcome to pass it on in a similar manner.

Wang Baoju

王宝菊 Wang Baoju,Whispering:The Waste land 耳语:《荒原》,中国

Stories are submitted to the artist through online conversations, offline gatherings, email submissions, and on-site writing. The artist then acts as an image-producing medium for the project, drawing the stories by hand and then post-processing them into postcards for the storytellers. The project began in 2020 with a collaboration with Bridge Projects in Los Angeles, capturing the stories of 17 American friends through Zoom video conversations.
