自2017年当选教科文组织总干事以来，阿祖莱一直积极推动文化在建立和平、创新发展、应对气候变化、人类福祉等方面的重要性获得更多认可。
由教科文组织主办，墨西哥承办的2022年世界文化政策与可持续发展会议（MONDIACULT 2022）是该进程的重要里程碑。这是40年来规模最大的世界文化会议，会上，各国首次承认文化为“全球公共物品”。

UNGA: UNESCO welcomes the importance placed on culture in the "Pact for the Future"
Meeting in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, the Heads of State and Government on Sunday adopted the "Pact for the Future", a set of joint measures to tackle the major international challenges. This text gives unprecedented prominence to culture, recognizing its role in sustainable development, and the need for States to invest in this sector. UNESCO has long-advocated for this.
"On Sunday, the Heads of State and Government chose to place culture at the heart of their response to the strategic challenges of our century. This decision recognizes the essential role this sector plays in the cohesion and transformation of our societies. It is the result of an ambitious multilateral dialogue led by UNESCO, which must now compel us to make culture a fully-fledged sustainable development objective by 2030."

Since being elected to lead UNESCO in 2017, Audrey Azoulay has actively campaigned for greater recognition of the importance of culture in establishing peace, in innovation and development, in the fight against climate change, and to peoples’ well-being.

The "Pact for the Future", adopted this Sunday in New York, calls on States to integrate culture into their economic, social and environmental policies, to promote intercultural dialogue, and to help facilitate international cooperation on the return and restitution of cultural property.
