Henry Curchod

Doctor hard love, 2023

91 x 147.3 cm (35 7/8 x 58 in)

2023;“Hugging a tree is like kissing a dog”,Shoot the Lobster,纽约,2023;“Trouble on the Event Horizon”,MAMOTH,伦敦,2023;“Rice is god’s dandruff”,Chauffeur,悉尼,2022;“Set Your Friends Free”,MAMOTH,伦敦,2021;“Sharing the Sky”,Sumer Gallery,陶朗加,2021;“Inside Head, Outside Head”,Martin Browne Gallery,帕丁顿,2021。近期群展包括:“闲人出差 II”,Gallery Vacancy,上海,2022;“In Between”,Spurs Gallery,北京,2022;“Distance is Comfort”,Chauffeur,悉尼,2022;“Of Foxes and Ghosts”,MAMOTH,伦敦,2022。 2023;“The Ramsay Art Prize”,2023;“The Sulman Prize”,2023;及“Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship”,2021。

Henry Curchod, born in 1992 in Palo Alto, US, now lives and works in London. Curchod received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of New South Wales in 2014. Pulling from his Western upbringing and Iranian heritage, Curchod seeks to explore the elusiveness of shifting perspectives by complicating the formalism of painting and the narrative capacity of art through his practice. His compositions are primarily figurative, applied in arresting colors and spontaneous faux-naif renderings that combine the characteristics of both painting and drawing. His forms are at once contorted and performative, tangled in seemingly impossible or extravagant situations. Through the juxtaposition of simple visual language and rich narrative tension, Curchod’s art serves as emotive commentaries on the mismatched metaphors and ambiguities of contemporary life. His solo exhibitions include: Safe Spaces, Gallery Vacancy at Paris Internationale, 2023; Hugging a tree is like kissing a dog, Shoot the Lobster, New York, 2023; Trouble on the Event Horizon, MAMOTH, London, 2023; Rice is god’s dandruff, Chauffeur, Sydney, 2022; Set Your Friends Free, MAMOTH, London, 2021; Sharing the Sky, Sumer Gallery, Tauranga, 2021; Inside Head, Outside Head, Martin Browne Gallery, Paddington, 2021. Recent group exhibitions include: Vacation II, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2022; In Between, Spurs Gallery, Beijing, 2022; Distance is Comfort, Chauffeur, Sydney, 2022; Of Foxes and Ghosts, MAMOTH, London, 2022. He was the recipient of the R&F Residency, New York, 2023; the PPP/Oostmeijer Residency, Amsterdam, 2023; and finalist for the Ramsay Art Prize, 2023; the Sulman Prize, 2023; and the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, 2021.

Alessandro Fogo

Sleep with one eye open, 2024

2023;“Hang a crocodile outside for the unbelievers”,Cassina Projects,米兰,2023;“Black Morning”,双人展Alessandro Fogo & Paola Angelini,Lyles & King Gallery,纽约,2022;“Skins and leathers”,PM/AM Gallery,伦敦,2022;“Alla luce del sole,un attimo prima di spegnersi”,Galleria Annarumma,那不勒斯,2021。 2021;“If on a winter’s night a traveller”,MAMOTH,伦敦, 2020,“Immersione Libera”,Bagni Misteriosi,Galleria Continua,米兰,2019。

Alessandro Fogo, born in 1992 in Thiene, Italy, now lives and works in San Benedetto del Tronto. In 2017, he obtained a Master in painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, Belgium after graduating with BA at IUAV Visual Arts in Venice. Fogo approaches through his painting practice, how the idea of mythical reasoning remains poignant to the revelation of our contemporary reality. Sourcing the myths around Italian mythological tales and the multifarious forms of idols throughout history, Fogo weaves personal narratives with mystical symbology to conjure visionary and allegorical qualities to his paintings. Like sensate lullabies, each scene speaks a mystical idiolect of their own, a language of lamentation for mystical lost to avant-garde practises throughout the present. Fogo’s solo exhibitions include: Mythos, Museo Palazzo Buonaccorsi, Macerata, 2023; Hierophany, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2023; Hang a crocodile outside for the unbelievers, Cassina Projects, Milan, 2023; Black Morning, Alessandro Fogo & Paola Angelini, Lyles & King Gallery, New York, 2022; Skins and leathers, PM/AM Gallery, London, 2022; Alla luce del sole, un attimo prima di spegnersi, Galleria Annarumma, Naples, 2021. 2023;“You Skin Is My Shield”,Gallery Vacancy于首尔弗里兹,2022;“CLOSE”,Kadel Willborn,杜塞尔多夫,2021;“Nabel”,海德堡美术协会,2021;“薇薇安・格蕾文”,巴登美术馆,2021;“荧变”,Gallery Vacancy,上海,2021;“Apple”,埃朗根美术馆,2020。

Vivian Greven, born in Bonn, Germany in 1985, now lives and works in Düsseldorf. Greven received her master’s degree at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2015. She creates ethereal paintings that borrow visually and thematically from classical arts, pop arts, and the digital media world, sliding in fluidity between representation and abstraction. Working in alluring colors and restrained arrangements, her paintings display the interplay between surface and form with a glowing luminosity, dramatically flirting with body structure, dualism, and human existence depicted in serenity and clarity. Beauty is rooted within holiness, which is in connection with the universal balance between the immortal and the ephemeral. Recent solo exhibitions include: Water, Neue Galerie Gladbeck, 2023; Your Skin Is My Shield, Gallery Vacancy at Frieze Seoul, 2022; CLOSE, Kadel Willborn, Düsseldorf, 2021; Nabel, Kunstverein Heidelberg, 2021; VIVIAN GREVEN, Kunstmuseum Langmatt, Baden, 2021; The Negatives, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2021; Apple, Kunstpalais Erlangen, 2020. Michael Ho

All the Way to Heaven II, 2023

Oil and acrylic on canvas

300 x 9.5 cm (118 1/8 x 3 3/4 in)

何麦克的个展包括:“As Feelings Burn Their Way”,High Art,巴黎,2023;“洞天”,Gallery Vacancy,上海,2023;“密恋”,Gallery Vacancy于伦敦弗里兹艺术博览会,伦敦,2022。

Michael Ho, born in Arnhem, Netherlands in 1991, now lives and works in London. Ho graduated from the Architectural Association in 2019. As a second-generation immigrant from China, Ho’s works investigate the notions of the Chinese diaspora, cultural mismatch, and subsequently cultural rediscovery through his painting practice. He employs a specific technique of painting from back to front, superimposing diluted images with resolved brush strokes, clashing Eastern traditions with Western aesthetics. Ho’s critical engagement with the orientalist images and tropes is multifold: from the playful to the political and from the erotic to the domestic. From 2020 to 2022, Ho worked with Chiyan Ho (1993-2022) as an artist duo. The duo’s solo exhibition includes: Kūnlún, V.O Curations, London, 2021. Ho’s solo exhibition includes: As Feelings Burn Their Way, High Art, Paris, 2023; Grotto Heavens, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2023; Tryst, Gallery Vacancy at Frieze London, London, 2022. His works have been featured in group exhibitions at GRIMM, New York; White Cube, Hong Kong; Blum & Poe, Tokyo; Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham; ICA, London; Blindspot Gallery, Hong Kong; Guts Gallery, London; Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai; Intersticio, Madrid; Soft Opening, London; and Delphian Gallery, London. His film projects have been screened at Piccadilly Circus, London, ICA, London and Nottingham Contemporary. Acrylic on canvas

Triptych, each: 160 x 120 cm (63 x 47 1/4 in)

Overall: 160 x 360 cm (63 x 141 1/4 in)

Huang Ko Wei, born in Taipei in 1988, now lives and works in Taipei. He holds a BFA and an MFA degree from the Taipei National University of the Arts. In his acrylic paintings, the artist delves into the theme of fluidity both in painterly language and his identity as an academically trained painter. In Huang’s deftly portrayed human figures, animals, and architectural space, the tension between ambiguity and legibility not only reveals the intentionally blurred boundary between representation and abstraction, an active response to the history of painting, but also indicates the artist’s relentless attempt at breaking free from the existing aesthetic convention. Huang’s meticulously balanced treatment of dynamic and static tones on canvas seeks to provide a distant, achronological yet universal visual experience, reflecting the gaps in the art history of postcolonial Taiwan. His solo exhibitions include: False Mirror, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2023; Puzzle, AKI Gallery, Leipzig, 2021; Roll, AKI Gallery, Taipei, 2021; One Die, AKI Gallery, Taipei, 2021; Phantom Gray, AKI Gallery, Taipei, 2015; Irrational Number, VT Artsalon, Taipei, 2013; Post-Paradise, Agora Art Salon, Taipei, 2011. Selected group exhibitions at: Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai; 2020 Taiwan Biennial, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung; Eslite Gallery, Taipei; dmwe Art Gallery, Taichung; Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Art, Kaohsiung.

2023;“A number of days lead to nothing”,Gallery Sofie Van de Velde,安特卫普,2023;“An apple can’t be tired”,Be-Part,克特雷特,2023;“When weeds bloom”,Nino Mier Gallery,洛杉矶,2022;“I can tell you stories”,Gallery Sofie Van de Velde,安特卫普,2021;和“Everybody’s heard about the bird”,Public Gallery,伦敦,2021。

Pieter Jennes, born in 1990 in Mortsel, Belgium, now lives and works in Antwerp. Jennes graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp in 2013 and from the University of Ghent in 2014. Jennes’s works reflect a myriad of art historical sources, including works by artists Jean Brusselmans, Otto Dix, James Ensor, and Georg Grosz. Treating his paintings as a theatrical site of ambivalence, the artist employs vibrant color, patterns, and texture to create a humorous juxtaposition. Jennes’s practice extends the Belgian genre painting tradition, offering a whimsical lens to re-evaluate our daily experiences. His recent solo exhibitions include: I’m Glad There Is You, Gallery Vacancy at Frieze Seoul, Seoul, 2023; A number of days lead to nothing, Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, Antwerp, 2023; An apple can’t be tired, Be-Part, Kortrijk, 2023; When weeds bloom, Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles, 2022; I can tell you stories, Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, Antwerp, 2021; and Everybody’s heard about the bird, Public Gallery, London, 2021. His works have been exhibited at: Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai; Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles; Bozar, Brussels; De Warande, Turnhout; and CIAP, Hasselt.

2023;“From The Cloud”,Baert Gallery,洛杉矶,2023;“Skin Deep”,Studio West Gallery,伦敦,2023;“A consciousness harnessed to flesh”,D Contemporary,伦敦,2023;“Now introducing 2022”,Studio West Gallery,伦敦,2022;“Proserpina”,Apiary Studios,伦敦,2022。

Preslav Kostov, born in Bulgaria in 1998, now lives and works in London. Kostov graduated with an MA at the Royal College of Art in 2023, a BA at Leeds Arts University in 2020, and studied at the Royal Drawing School until 2017. Kostov delves into the complexities of identity and his immigrant experience from Bulgaria to the United Kingdom through oil paintings that arise from a cumulative process of self-exploration and the technique of automatism. Engaging in the dialogue with forms and palette inspired from Old Master painting traditions, his imposing compositions depict imagined sceneries where narratives and perspectives are discovered and invented within a liminal realm. His works resonate with the enduring reality of human experience while deliberately eschewing definitive temporal affiliations. The anonymous, ghostly figures he portrays are detached from singular narrative experiences, inhabiting in a realm free from worldly possessions and cultural signifiers. Recent group exhibitions include: Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch Me, Berntson Bhattacharjee, London, 2023; From The Cloud, Baert Gallery, Los Angeles, 2023; Skin Deep, Studio West Gallery, London, 2023; A consciousness harnessed to flesh, D Contemporary, London, 2023; Now introducing 2022, Studio West Gallery, London, 2022; Proserpina, Apiary Studios, London, 2022. Kostov was the recipient of The Elizabeth Greenshields Award in 2021 and 2023, and is an elected member of The Contemporary British Portrait Painters Society.

Laurens Legiers, born in Antwerp in 1994, now lives and works in Antwerp. He received his education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in 2018. Undertaking the subject matter of nature, Legiers’s practice emerges from the Belgian art historical tradition through his assiduous formal analysis of the rich tropes and motifs from Expressionism, Romanticism, and Surrealism. His paintings employ a figurative approach to transform the daily objects into stylized geometric forms through the pivoted curvilinearity, the idealized roundedness, along with the intricate treatment of volume and light to provoke an enduring sense of serenity and tranquility. The artistic endeavor of Legiers becomes a site of simultaneous tension and balance: the Surrealist sensibilities epitomized via perception, scale, and color nevertheless seep through the repetitive and symmetrical composition of the canvas, resulting in an alternative interpretation of art history. Legiers’s solo exhibitions include: Drifting Onshore, Gallery Vacancy at Taipei Dangdai, 2023; If only, Nicodim Gallery, New York, 2023; Dusk till Dawn, PLUS-ONE Gallery, Antwerp, 2022; A Veil of Thoughts, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2021 and Soft Thoughts, PLUS-ONE Gallery, Antwerp, 2020. His works have been featured in group exhibitions at L21 Gallery, Madrid; Nicodim Gallery, New York; Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles; Tuesday to Friday, Valencia; PLUS-ONE Gallery, Antwerp; The Hole, New York; Ramp Gallery, London; WOAW Gallery, Hong Kong; KOP VZW, Antwerp; Alpha Gallery, Antwerp; and Souterrain, Antwerp.

Blue Mystique, 2023

Oil on linen

Rute Merk, born in 1991 in Lithuania, now lives and works in Berlin. She received her BA in Painting from Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2013 and acquired her painting diploma from Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, 2020. Exploring the essence of human condition, Merk employs academic painting tradition to simulate the glitch generated  from physical representations in the mediated world and the integration of identities under the conditions of cognitive capitalism. Figures and objects are usually depicted and suspended in the center of her composition in a homogenized manner, unified and isolated against the backdrop rendered in an alienating vastness and hollowness. The intriguing smoothness of her fabricated surface imitates and re-assesses the prevailing visual aesthetics in the digital sphere, concealing brushworks, the laborious endeavor, into dehumanized perfection. Meeting both the traditional and the artificial on her canvas, Merk contours both engineered sublime and concomitant anxieties of planned obsolescence in our technology conditioned life. The boundary between work and leisure is blurred, merged, and interlaced, illuminating the networked loneliness perpetuated and embodied in the immateriality shifting between the virtual and the realistic spectrum. Her solo exhibitions include: Moments, beacon, Munich, 2023; XP, Tara Downs, New York, 2023; f(x), Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2022; Стрiлецька, WT Foundation, Kyiv, 2021; SS20, Downs & Ross, New York, 2020; and Solitaire, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2020. Her works have been featured in exhibitions at: Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas; National Gallery of Art, Vilnius; Kunstverein München, Munich; Margburger Kunstverein, Margburger; Rupert, Vilnius; Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius. Merk’s works are in the collections of Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; M Art Foundation, Hong Kong; M Woods Museum, Beijing; MO Museum, Vilnius; Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Geneva; Sifang Art Museum, Nanjing; and X Museum, Beijing. She will have her solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, Vilnius, in 2024.

2021;“Many drops make a puddle”,Castor Gallery,伦敦,2020;和“Soft News”,Beursschouwburg,比利时,2019。

Charline Tyberghein, born in 1993 in Antwerp, Belgium, now lives and works in Antwerp. Tyberghein graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp in 2018. Tyberghein’s artistic practice absorbs the spirit of Belgian Surrealism, carried out through the trompe l'oeil technique. Her paintings conceal playfulness and unexpectancy within the orderly structured geometric clarity, meanwhile activating the dynamic viewing relationship between her works and the viewer. Tyberghein’s solo exhibitions include: Domestic Blitz, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2023; Worrier Princess, Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, Antwerp, 2021; Many drops make a puddle, Castor Gallery, London, 2020; and Soft News, Beursschouwburg, Brussels, 2019.
