What's this story about?

Grandpa Chen used a tin monkey to tell the children how the magnet worked. As the children were all interested, Mum took them to go on the magnet train. It was such an exciting experience. On the way back home, they also helped a lady with the magnet!

Talk together
  • Look at the cover image together. What is Lee holding in his hand? Have you ever used a magnet to attract metal? What happens?

  • Read the back cover blurb together. What do you think 'a magnetic day' might mean? What do you think might happen in the story?

  • Look through the book and talk about the pictures.

AFTER READING

Q1: Look at pages 2-3. How does Grandpa Chen make the monkey move without touching it?

A1: He has a magnet under the table. Because the monkey is metal, the magnet attracts the monkey. When the magnet moves, the monkey moves too.

Q2: Turn to page 10. Why does Mum tell the children to keep together?

A2: The journey on the metro to Maglev Station is busy. She is worried that the children might get lost in the crowd.

Q3: Look back at pages 22-23. How did the children help the lady to get her keys back? Why was the magnet useful?

A3: The children used the magnet to attract the keys. It worked because keys are metal, too.
