Special issue on “Autonomic Nervous System and Chronic Diseases”

Aim & Scope
The autonomic nervous system (ANS), also known as the visceral nervous system or the vegetative nervous system, is a major component of the peripheral nervous system, regulating involuntary physiological processes to maintain homeostasis and coordinate responses to external and internal stimuli. The ANS innervates almost all major organs, including the gut, adipose tissues, liver, pancreas, urinary tract, and reproductive system.
Many common conditions and disorders can affect the autonomic nervous system, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, infections, and tumors. Autonomic dysregulation, in turn, has wide manifestations in numerous body systems and profound implications with chronic diseases, including metabolic disorders, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, cancers, respiratory disorders, and neurological disorders.
This special issue calls for research articles, critical reviews, perspectives, and research highlights that accentuate the roles of the ANS in major chronic diseases. The areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following subjects:
1. Advances in the cellular and molecular networks of the autonomic regulation of organ homeostasis.
2. The mechanisms of autonomic disturbance-associated diseases.
3. The autonomic neural mechanisms underlying the physiology and pathogenesis of chronic diseases.
4. Advances in the assessment and regulation of autonomic neural activities.
5. Clinical potentials of autonomic neuromodulation therapy in chronic diseases.
