Amreli police on Tuesday arrested a 25-year-old woman who allegedly killed her 45-day-old son to elope with her lover.
On Aug 15, Manisha Bambhaniya brought her son to the community health centre (CHC) in Babra town but refused to acknowledge him as her child. Later, she confessed to having killed him by drowning him in a water tank at Vavda village so that she could elope with her lover, as the latter wouldn’t accept another man’s son according to his community tradition.
The complaint was registered by Rekha Rathod, a police sub-inspector at Babra police station, after she received details of the medico-legal case (MLC) from the CHC. Manisha and some villagers took the child to the CHC, claiming he was found unconscious in a water tank near a well. Initially, police registered the case as an accidental death.
Speaking to TOI, Amreli deputy superintendent of police Chirag Desai said, “She initially refused to identify the child as being hers. When she acknowledged it was her child, she shifted the blame to her husband, saying he may have killed the boy.”
Rakesh, Manisha’s husband, is currently missing. The couple also have a two-year-old daughter.
Originally from a village in Jhabua, MP, Manisha was in a relationship with one Mithun Bhuriya for two years before marrying Rakesh and moving to Amreli. Both Manisha and Rakesh worked as farm labourers in various villages in the district.
A few months before the killing, just before she gave birth to the baby boy, Manisha had visited her native village and reconnected with Mithun. After giving birth, she returned to Amreli with her husband but continued communicating with Mithun. Discord arose between Manisha and her husband when he discovered her relationship with Mithun.
On the night of Aug 14, the couple had a fight and her husband in a fit of rage told her to go with Mithun.
Manisha woke at about 5am on Aug 15 to find her husband missing from their bed, although both children were still there. Taking her infant son with her, she looked for her husband around the village for an hour but in vain.
“She assumed he had abandoned the family and she decided to go to Mithun. According to the social custom there, a man doesn’t accept another man’s son but will accept a daughter. The woman thought Mithun wouldn’t accept her with her son and decided to eliminate him,” Desai added.
