A Chinese Canadian user, known online as "yycmenace," recently stirred up heated discussions on the popular Chinese social media app, Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book), with a provocative comment questioning why "every Chinese girl on this app looks the same." Identified by an IP address in Canada, yycmenace has no bio details on his profile, adding mystery to his motives but also fueling outrage and intense backlash from Chinese netizens.
The comment, which implied a uniformity among Chinese women on the platform, quickly went viral, attracting a flood of responses from thousands of users. Reactions ranged from mockery and sarcasm to outright hostility, reflecting a shared sense of offense at what many perceived as a racial and cultural insult.
The user's original post saw some light-hearted reactions. Daisy, a user from Guangdong, simply replied with laughter, sharing a chain of “hahahaha.” But as more people engaged with the post, the tone of responses escalated, many netizens defending Chinese women against what they perceived as a narrow and offensive perspective.
One comment that gained significant traction came from a user with the handle "拉拉鲨鱼" from Shaanxi, who responded with the phrase “have a good die,” a darkly humorous take suggesting that the user should face the consequences of their own statement. Another commenter, "猫朦胧" from Heilongjiang, joked, asking if anyone had a certain profane emoji that they could share in response. This type of humorous anger was common across responses, as many netizens expressed outrage while infusing their comments with sarcasm.
A few users responded in English, adding an ironic twist to their posts. For instance, "EA2231" from Guangdong aggressively retorted with "go back your asshole little dick," while others expressed that they didn't want “a racist pig” on the app. Some commenters even criticized "yycmenace’s" presumed ethnicity, speculating that the post was meant to provoke a reaction. "Bethy2233" from Shanghai commented, “it seems like you have no friends in Canada, so you come here to find a sense of existence,” mocking the user’s apparent desire for attention.
The sheer volume of responses, many filled with explicit language and strong emotions, demonstrated how deeply the comment had resonated with Xiaohongshu users. Several commenters referred to their perception of "Western" arrogance or ignorance regarding Chinese culture and beauty standards. Many responses adopted a similar aggressive tone, mirroring the initial insult but defending Chinese identity.
Some users took a reflective approach. For instance, "可爱又刻薄的美少女战士" from Chongqing noted that the question might reflect the user’s own limited understanding. She pointed out that instead of making generalizations, yycmenace might consider the diverse beauty that actually exists within the app’s Chinese community. Another user commented, “In a frog’s eye, every swan looks the same,” implying that the fault lies in the observer rather than those being observed.
