In an extraordinary story from Hebei Province, a woman named Wu Guiying has become the subject of public attention after pretending to be paralyzed for 20 years. The incident, which started as a family dispute, spiraled into a prolonged deception that strained family bonds, disrupted lives, and ended with an unexpected turn of events.
Wu, now 35, claimed she became paralyzed at 15 following a heated argument with her older brother, which ended in her being slapped twice. In the aftermath, she insisted she could not walk, a condition that baffled doctors but was accepted by her family. For two decades, her relatives cared for her as though she were truly disabled, unable to move or take care of herself. Over the years, her parents, siblings, and even extended family made tremendous sacrifices to ensure Wu’s comfort and care.
“I feel so guilty," Wu’s older brother was quoted as saying to local reporters. "I've always blamed myself for causing her paralysis.”
The tipping point came in 2009, when strange occurrences around the home of Wu’s sister raised suspicions. Mysterious shadows appeared at night, leading Wu’s sister and brother-in-law to believe their house was haunted. Their daughter, however, was skeptical and suggested a surprising theory: she speculated that the “ghost” might be her aunt, Wu Guiying, who was allegedly paralyzed.
To investigate, Wu’s brother-in-law discreetly installed a hidden camera, which revealed the shocking truth: Wu Guiying, the “paralyzed” family member, was seen walking around the house when no one was watching. This revelation left the family dumbfounded. Wu's sister confronted her, but Wu denied the allegations, attempting to continue her deception. However, faced with irrefutable evidence, Wu finally admitted her pretense.
The exposure of Wu’s feigned condition became a viral sensation on Chinese social media, igniting widespread discussion. Netizens had mixed reactions:
One commenter noted, “This is a new level of laziness! Pretending for 20 years - who would have believed it?” Another remarked, “Unbelievable that a grown woman could manipulate her entire family for so long. Her family must feel devastated.” Yet others found humor in the situation, with one saying, “With acting skills like that, she should be in Hollywood!”
After the family’s initial shock, they opted to help Wu start fresh. She received psychological counseling through a local television program, and her physical rehabilitation progressed well. Wu has since transformed her life, embracing education and engaging in household responsibilities with newfound enthusiasm. Remarkably, she has also found romance with a local man, inspired by her story of resilience and growth.
