A Chinese woman recently discovered she was not her parents' biological daughter after taking a DNA test, spurred by jokes from her colleagues about her appearance.
The 24-year-old woman, identified by the surname Dong, lives in Xinxiang, Henan province. During a recent interview, she shared how her colleagues frequently commented on her distinctive features, saying she didn’t look like a local. "They’d say, ‘You don’t look like someone from Henan at all. Your nose is wider, you have thick lips, and your eyes are bigger and deeper,’” Dong recalled. Intrigued and somewhat unsettled, Dong began questioning her parents about her origins, but they were evasive and even provided inconsistent information about her birth date.
With her curiosity growing, Dong decided to take a DNA test to uncover the truth. The test results indicated that her genetic background pointed to Guangxi province in southern China, far from her home in Henan. There was no genetic connection to Henan, suggesting that she might have been born in Guangxi.
The story took another turn when a woman from Guangxi, surnamed Qi, reached out after seeing the news, suspecting that Dong could be her long-lost daughter. Qi’s daughter had been missing since birth, and she noted several striking resemblances between herself and Dong. Qi, who endured years of grief after her daughter's disappearance, said, “It’s quite a coincidence that this young woman is also 24. I look at her and see my daughter in her.”
Qi’s son, who would be Dong’s brother if the connection is confirmed, has also shown enthusiasm about the potential family reunion, referring to Dong as his sister. He remarked, “My mum is almost certain, and I want to meet my sister, too.”
Adding to the intrigue, both Dong and Qi’s missing daughter share a character in their given names: "Lan." Moved by these coincidences, Qi and her son have arranged to travel to Henan to meet Dong in person.
The story has sparked strong reactions online, with many netizens sympathizing with Dong and hoping for a joyful reunion. Some commenters highlighted the importance of understanding Dong's backstory. “It’s essential to find out if she was lost, kidnapped, or legally adopted. It makes all the difference in her life,” one user noted.
Another expressed hope, saying, “This is like a real-life drama. I hope she wasn’t abandoned - that would be heartbreaking. Wishing her the best in finding her birth family.”
