In a case that seems stranger than fiction, a man in Jilin Province managed to maintain relationships with five different "wives" in the same residential complex for four years before his elaborate deception was finally exposed by police.
The extraordinary story came to light when two of his "wives," identified by pseudonyms Xiao Jia and Xiao Hong, received unexpected calls from local police about their "husband's" involvement in a criminal investigation. The shocking revelation occurred while both women were coincidentally walking their children in the same community compound.
The man, whose identity has not been disclosed for legal reasons, had one legally registered marriage while maintaining four other relationships under the pretense of marriage. In an astounding display of audacity, one of his unofficial "wives" who had borne him a child even lived in the same building as his legal wife, separated by just a few floors.
"This case demonstrates an unprecedented level of deception," said local police officer Wang Lei. "The suspect managed to compartmentalize five separate lives within the same residential complex for years without detection."
The case has sparked intense discussion on Chinese social media, with many netizens expressing disbelief at the man's time management skills and audacity:
"I can barely manage one relationship, and this guy maintained five!" commented one user on Weibo.
"The most shocking part isn't the multiple relationships - it's maintaining them all in the same compound for four years without anyone finding out," wrote another.
Some netizens focused on the practical aspects of the deception:
"How did he manage financially? Supporting five households is no small feat," questioned one user.
"The level of planning required to prevent these women from meeting each other in such close proximity is mind-boggling," noted another.
Legal experts have weighed in on the case, pointing out that while only one marriage was legally registered, the man could face criminal charges for fraud and bigamy under Chinese law.
"Even though only one marriage was officially registered, maintaining multiple marriage-like relationships through deception can constitute fraud," explained legal expert Liu Ming.
