A remarkable story has emerged from the rural heartlands of Henan Province, where a 50-year-old man named Gao Yulong, originally from Nanyang, Henan, has made a new life for himself in Nepal. His story, marked by personal and cultural transformations, relationships, and reinventions, has attracted significant interest and critique from Chinese social media users.
Gao Yulong, who was born in 1974 into a poor farming family, experienced a difficult childhood. His mother left the family when he was only five, leaving his father to raise Gao and his younger brother alone. After leaving school, Gao worked on the family farm and eventually took up labor jobs in Shanxi to make ends meet. Despite a tough life marked by poverty and heartbreak, Gao’s resilience and desire for companionship remained strong.
In his twenties, Gao had a serious relationship with a young woman who, despite family objections, was willing to be with him. However, after a series of tumultuous events - including Gao running away with her and later being separated by her family - the relationship ended. Following this heartbreak, Gao spiraled into depression, leading him to a near-fatal suicide attempt. But after surviving this episode, he committed to improving himself and building financial stability.
In 1999, Gao married a woman from Jiangxi Province, and the couple settled in rural Henan. They had a son together, but as Gao traveled around the country (and even as far as France) working in the aluminum door and window trade, the couple’s relationship grew strained. Eventually, the marriage ended in 2022, with Gao leaving all property and custody of his son to his ex-wife.
After the divorce, Gao moved to Nepal, inspired by his nephew’s success in livestreaming. There, he embarked on a new career as a livestreaming personality, adopting a flamboyant and unorthodox style - he grew his hair long, often dressed in women’s clothing, and spoke softly, leading many viewers to mistake him for a woman. His unique presentation quickly attracted a following, though not all of the attention was positive. Critics have often condemned his “unmanly” appearance, a critique that Gao seems to disregard, using the controversy to drive viewership.
Gao’s life took another turn when he expressed interest in finding a wife in Nepal. A Nepali woman who had once been married to a Chinese man introduced him to a 32-year-old Nepali woman named Lisa. Lisa, who grew up in poverty in Kathmandu, had a difficult life; married at 17, she was left to raise her daughter alone after her husband abandoned her. Despite her hardships, Lisa impressed Gao with her resilience and warmth. They began dating, and he developed a close relationship with Lisa’s now 15-year-old daughter, even asking her during their first meeting, “Can I be your father?” to which she reportedly responded positively.
In October 2023, Gao and Lisa held a wedding ceremony in Kathmandu. The wedding included traditional Nepali customs, such as Gao placing his foot on Lisa’s forehead, symbolizing her loyalty and dedication to him. Gao has since taken on financial responsibility for Lisa and her daughter, providing them with a modest living and supporting his stepdaughter’s education. His dream is to one day bring her to China for further studies.
Gao’s unique presentation on social media has drawn significant scrutiny. In July 2024, he shared a video of himself embracing his stepdaughter, sparking heated discussions among netizens. Critics argued that, given her age, their interactions appeared inappropriate and suggested a need for greater boundaries. However, Gao dismissed these criticisms and continued to share videos of his family life, unfazed by the negative comments. Some supporters viewed his relationship with Lisa and her daughter as genuine, defending him against accusations of impropriety, while others saw his behavior as odd and unbecoming.
One netizen commented, “He may look unusual, but it seems like he really cares for this family,” while another remarked, “His behavior might bring shame to our country.” Gao, however, has openly ignored these opinions, choosing instead to live by his own values and style. Some fans even jokingly refer to him, Lisa, and her daughter as “three sisters,” pointing to his feminine presentation and their close-knit lifestyle.
Despite the popularity Gao’s content has garnered, his income from livestreaming has declined due to increasing competition in the industry. Gao acknowledges that his earnings have dwindled and that he may not be able to maintain the quality of life he once promised Lisa. Nonetheless, Lisa has remained by his side, expressing her readiness to return to rural life if needed. She reportedly told him, “Even if we have no money, we can go back to the village and farm together. I have land there.”
