Three Chinese nationals died in a fire at a store in northern Milan late Thursday, according to Italian authorities and media reports. The Chinese Consulate in Milan confirmed the victims' identities.
The fire broke out in a northern district of Milan, claiming the lives of two brothers, aged 17 and 19, and a 24-year-old woman, according to the Ansa news agency. Rescuers discovered their bodies in a bathroom on the store's first floor, where they may have sought refuge from the blaze, local media Il Giorno reported.
Five fire brigades were dispatched to the scene and managed to extinguish the flames in the early hours of Friday, the Milan Fire Department confirmed on social media.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire. Milan’s Chief Prosecutor, Marcello Viola, stated that all possibilities, including arson, are being considered. Italy's military police, the Carabinieri, are leading the inquiry.
The fire spread quickly, causing significant damage to the 700-square-metre store. Claudio De Maio, an inspector with the Lombardy Fire Brigade, said investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the blaze and are exploring all potential leads.
