San Francisco-based entrepreneur Wang Shuo, originally from Shenyang, China, has joined Forbes' esteemed "America’s Richest Self-Made Women" list, an achievement that highlights her journey to remarkable financial success. At 35, Wang is one of the youngest on the list, with an estimated net worth of $850 million, sharing the 39th spot with music legend Madonna. More recently, she also made the Hurun China Rich List with a net worth valued at approximately 8.5 billion yuan ($1.2 billion), solidifying her status as one of the wealthiest self-made women.
Wang’s journey began when she moved to Baltimore at the age of 16 to join her mother and grandparents. To support her family, she started selling scooters at flea markets on weekends through her mother’s import-export business, gaining her first experience in sales and sparking her entrepreneurial spirit. Wang pursued her education in mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), specializing in robotics. She briefly continued her studies in a master’s program but soon left to follow her ambition in the tech industry.
In 2015, Wang co-founded Aeris Cleantec, a company focused on advanced cleaning technology, with fellow MIT student Pierre Bi. Originally based in Beijing, Aeris Cleantec eventually attracted international attention and was acquired by iRobot, a Massachusetts-based company, for around $100 million in 2021.
Wang’s most notable success came when she co-founded Deel in 2019 with Alex Bouaziz, whom she met at MIT. Deel, a human resources software company, quickly gained traction, achieving a valuation of $12 billion by April 2022, although its recent valuation has been estimated at $7 billion. Deel’s success has firmly established Wang in the upper echelons of self-made entrepreneurs.
The news of Wang’s achievements stirred online discussions, with netizens praising her resilience and innovation. One commented, “Her success story shows the power of combining talent with hard work.” Others noted that, despite being labeled "self-made," Wang's journey was supported by family, mentors, and educational opportunities. “No one succeeds entirely alone,” one user remarked, echoing comments by figures like Warren Buffett, who has acknowledged society’s role in personal achievements.
