Reports are swirling that Donald Trump's team is mulling over a controversial plan to deport undocumented immigrants to Rwanda, an idea originally cooked up by the UK's previous Conservative government but ditched due to legal snags.
A source told the Sun on Sunday that Trump's squad is giving the Rwanda proposal some serious thought, in line with his tough stance on illegal immigration. The insider revealed, "Trump campaigned on a promise to crack down on illegal immigration - and he is determined to stick to it."
They added, "His team is looking at the Rwanda scheme. He is considering deporting illegal migrants to Rwanda and other countries so they cannot stay on American soil."
Trump's hardline approach to immigration, especially at the US-Mexico border, was a cornerstone of his platform, propelling him to a win against Kamala Harris this month. Trump has been vocal about launching widespread deportations from the get-go, though specifics on its execution remain sparse.
In a recent move, Trump tapped Tom Homan as his border czar. Homan, ex-acting director of ICE and known for his stringent immigration views, earlier this year answered affirmatively when questioned if there was a way to stop undocumented parents from being split from their children who are US citizens: "yes, they can all be deported together."
Mr. Homan had issued a stark warning earlier this year, saying: "No one's off the table. If you're here illegally, you better be looking over your shoulder." With the new president stepping in, there's a strong expectation that an executive order will swiftly be enacted to end the age-old policy that grants U. S. citizenship to children born to illegal immigrants - a rule that has been around for more than a hundred years.
Just like the British government's plans, any attempts to send migrants to Rwanda are likely to encounter legal pushback. However, with Republican control of both houses of Congress and a conservative Supreme Court, the Trump administration is on firm footing to make good on its campaign vows.
