A German student specializing in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) gained widespread attention on Chinese social media for saving a woman experiencing a heart attack during a mountain climb in Dengfeng, Henan Province.
Joel Mikael Walker, 29, who goes by his Chinese name Wuming, was filming a show in the region when he was alerted to a woman who had collapsed. With over 1.45 million followers on Douyin, Wuming is well-known for his dedication to TCM and fluency in Henan dialect.
Arriving at the scene, Wuming found the woman unconscious, pale, and without a discernible pulse. Suspecting sudden cardiac arrest, he quickly contacted his mentor, Song Zhaopu, a renowned TCM practitioner, for guidance. Under Song’s direction, Wuming employed TCM techniques instead of conventional CPR, citing concerns about the woman’s delicate condition.
"The woman was very thin and lying on rocky ground. I worried that performing CPR might break her ribs," Wuming explained to Elephant News. Instead, he splashed cold water on her face to stimulate her skin and tapped her elbow pits repeatedly until red marks, or sha, appeared. After more than 20 taps, her pulse returned, and she regained consciousness, even managing to speak.
Song elaborated on the technique, explaining that tapping the elbow pit can unblock meridians, improve qi flow, and promote blood circulation. The use of cool water, he added, is a traditional method to help revive someone by stimulating alertness.
Wuming’s TCM journey began at age 11 during martial arts training at a Shaolin Temple in Germany. In 2015, he moved to China to study at Henan University of Chinese Medicine, eventually earning a master’s degree in acupuncture. Today, he balances his role as a social media influencer with his mission to promote TCM globally.
While many hailed Wuming’s actions as a testament to the efficacy of TCM, others voiced doubts about the story’s credibility. Some netizens suggested the incident might have been staged to promote Wuming’s growing fame as a TCM ambassador.
One skeptical user wrote, “A foreign influencer saving someone with TCM? This sounds too perfect to be true.” Another commented, “It’s convenient that the whole incident was filmed and perfectly aligns with his influencer brand.”
Despite the criticism, many defended Wuming’s actions. “Regardless of whether it was staged, the method worked, and someone’s life was saved,” one supporter noted.
In response to the skepticism, Wuming said, “This isn’t about me. It’s about the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine and how it can save lives in the right hands.”
