A heartbreaking incident unfolded in a newly opened shopping mall in Jining, Shandong province, last Saturday (Nov 16), when a young girl fell four stories to her death after a glass railing gave way.
Surveillance footage and clips shared on Weibo show the girl standing near an escalator, in a corner bounded by a glass railing. As she shifted her weight and appeared to lean on the glass, it suddenly collapsed.
The girl lost her balance and attempted to grab the escalator's handrail, but her efforts were futile. Moments later, she fell to the ground floor. Disturbing photos and videos taken after the incident show the girl lying motionless in a pool of blood, with shocked bystanders nearby.
An eyewitness who was inside a ground-floor store recounted hearing a loud "bang" that startled her. Rushing outside to investigate, she saw the girl lying on the floor, gravely injured.
Despite the mall's proximity to a hospital, paramedics reportedly took over 10 minutes to arrive due to heavy traffic that evening.
Local authorities have confirmed the girl's death and stated that an investigation into the cause of the tragedy is ongoing. The glass railing’s apparent failure has raised serious questions about the safety standards and construction quality of the shopping mall, which had only recently opened to the public.
The incident has sparked widespread discussions on social media, with many netizens expressing anger and frustration over the mall's safety protocols. “How can something like this happen in a brand-new mall? Who is responsible for the poor quality of this construction?” wrote one user on Weibo. Another commented, “This is such a preventable tragedy. Basic safety standards must be enforced.”
