A man in eastern China’s Anhui province, identified only by his surname Feng, has been sentenced to a one-year suspended jail term for abandoning his terminally ill wife shortly after their marriage.
Feng married Wang in 2022, but two months later, Wang was diagnosed with terminal-stage intestinal cancer. Initially, Feng provided some care. However, within a few months, he used work commitments in another city as an excuse to distance himself from his responsibilities. Despite Wang and her family’s repeated attempts to contact him, Feng avoided all communication.
Wang, facing mounting medical bills, was forced to borrow money for her treatment. She tragically passed away after spending over 200 days in the hospital, with Feng offering neither emotional nor financial support during her illness.
Wang’s family filed a lawsuit against Feng at the Shitai County People’s Court, accusing him of abandonment. They revealed that Feng had even proposed divorce twice while Wang was battling her illness. After being summoned to court, Feng eventually reached a settlement with Wang’s family, which led to their forgiveness.
Under Chinese law, abandonment of a spouse in need can lead to criminal charges. The court sentenced Feng to a one-year jail term, suspended, highlighting the seriousness of his actions.
The case has drawn widespread condemnation on Chinese social media, with users expressing outrage over Feng’s actions.
“This man abandoned his wife when she needed him most. It’s beyond cruel,” wrote one commenter.
Another added: “How can someone be so heartless? This crosses all moral boundaries.”
Some users proposed preventive measures, with one suggesting, “Couples should undergo comprehensive health check-ups before marriage to avoid such tragedies.”
