A woman surnamed Liu has been arrested in China after stealing pork worth nearly 1,000 yuan (US$140) from a supermarket over 10 separate occasions in a single month. Initially denying the allegations, Liu later confessed when caught with stolen goods in her possession.

The thefts began in September when Liu inadvertently failed to scan an item at a self-checkout counter. Realizing no one contacted her to rectify the mistake, she decided to exploit the situation. She repeatedly stole pork by pretending to process payments at self-checkout counters, leaving without completing transactions.

Her actions went unnoticed until a supermarket inventory revealed discrepancies. Surveillance footage identified Liu as the culprit, and she was apprehended during her latest attempt to steal pork.

When confronted, Liu initially denied responsibility, claiming the individual in the footage was not her. “There are many people who look and dress alike. It’s normal for two similar individuals to appear in the same supermarket,” she argued.

However, during the arrest, police found two boxes of freshly packaged pork in Liu’s bag. Faced with irrefutable evidence, she admitted to the thefts.

Liu is currently in police custody and faces charges of theft. Legal proceedings are ongoing.
