1. What information you need to ask pilot when you call pilot station?

Thank you for your interesting question! When I call pilot station I need to know what time pilot onboard, pilot boarding position, pilot boarding speed, which side pilot ladder and pilot arrangement, etc. do he need man ropeand heaving line.

2.  do you do when your vessel entering heavy traffic area?

The first I will follow standing order and SMS of company. Second I will enhance look out. I will call master if I have any doubt and i will standby main engine if necessary.

3. What information you need to report with VTS?

Name of ship, call sign, last port and next port of call, ETA , how many crew onboard, what are they nationalities, what is cargo on board, do you carry dangerous cargo, etc.

4. When you on board how do you inspection CO2 system?

I will follow plan maintenance system of company and carry out weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual, two years inspection.

As weekly inspection I will verify all CO2 system control panel indicators are functional by operating the lamp/indicator test switch, verify all control/section valves are in the correct position.

As monthly inspection I will verify containers/cylinders fitted with pressure gauges are in the proper range and the installation free from leakage.

AS annual inspection I will visually inspect all accessible components for proper condition for example:

hydrostatic test date, cylinders condition, control/section valves, visual alarms, piping and tubing, etc.

AS two year inspection I will check blow dry compressed air or nitrogen through the discharge piping and weighed cylinders.

5. How do you do with CO2 system when vessel sailing?

Normally I will l keep CO2 in lock, the keys I will hang on a board with marking CO2 room on bridge. Only go inside to check when weekly, monthly in section.

6. How do you realize that anchor is dragged and what is your action?

First, I will set swinging circle, if vessel out of that swinging circle, I can say that anchor is dragging.

I will follow the Master’s Standing orders, Notice to Master/engine room when anchor is dragged.

7. What do you do in cargo watch?

I will:

First: Assist to chief officer for cargo, ballast loading/discharging sequences.

Second: Follow gangway watch procedure and ensure safe security, round patrol regularly.

Third: record all ballast & cargo loading/discharging activities, visitors or others into deck watch log book.

8. What do you hand over or take over?

Direction, Speed and Ship’s position…

Situation of weather, Sea state, visibility…

Situation of Vessels density around…

The operation of marine equipment’s…

Night order and the other instructions of Master…

Notice: when the vessel is maneuvering to avoid , must pause handed over until the ship returned safe location .When you do not hand over duty?

Don’t hand over duty when I see the receiver do not able to take care of safety watch

Don’t hand over duty when I see the receiver has too much Alcohol

Don’t hand over duty when Ship are avoiding or Ship is in trouble

9. Tell me, which logbook does third mate need to know?

Third mate need to know: deck logbook, bell book, official log book, Compass error log book, radar log book, GPS log book, GMDSS log book.

10. How do you record bell book?

I will record:

Ship particular data such as: draft, date, time, port/location, position…

Time of trial and testing main engine/equipment’s

Time of pilot on embarkation/disembarkation.

Engine movement by telegraph (Ahead/astern)

Mooring sequences (First line, last line, all line let go, and all line fast, tug line…)

If requirement of port authority or company, we need to additional other information such as gangway down, time of vessel to buoy No., last buoy passing….

11. How do you record Log book:

The first: I will follow the rules and example of log book on the first part of log book:

While at sea At the end of each what the OOW must enter into logbook what happened in your watch: weather

condition, sea state, wind state, Ship’s position & Log showing at 0400, 0800, 1200, 1600, 2000, 2400, Alternated course, checked cargo condition/lashing condition, changed clean ballast water (start and stop position/time), changed oil (start and stop position/time).

Encounter heavy/typhoon/storm/hurricane weather or dense fog.

Emergency drill/education.

Inspection lifesaving & firefighting appliances onboard.

Accidents/trouble.

12. In your previous company, what is the minimum UKC?

At open sea value UKC equal 20% of maximum draught + maximum Squat

At coastal waters and out ports limits channel value UKC equal UCK 15% of maximum draught + maximum Squat.

13. Do you know how to get safety depth and safety contour?( You must know how to calculate safety

setting on ECDIS)?

I can calculate according to SMS requirements.

Safety Depth = Maximum Static Draft + UKC + Squat (Maximum) + height of seaswell+ safety margin)– Height of Tide (minimum and may include negative surge)

14. Tell me what do you check and maintenance in weekly inspection lifeboat.

Visual Inspection: Conduct a visual inspection of the lifeboat's overall condition, including the hull, deck,handrails, and fittings, looking for any signs of damage, wear, or corrosion.

Launching and Retrieval System: Inspect the launching and retrieval system, including the release mechanisms,winches, davits, and other equipment, to ensure they are in proper working order.

Emergency Equipment: Check the lifeboat's emergency equipment such as life jackets, immersion suits, distress signals, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers to ensure they are present, accessible, and in good condition.

Communication Devices: Inspect and test the communication devices, such as radios, distress beacons, and signaling equipment, to verify their operational status and compliance with regulations.

Propulsion System (if applicable): If the lifeboat is equipped with an engine or propulsion system, check its operation, fuel levels, and any signs of leaks or malfunctions.

Battery and Electrical Systems: Inspect the battery and electrical systems, including checking battery charge levels, testing lights and alarms, and ensuring proper wiring connections.

Steering and Control Mechanisms: Inspect the steering mechanisms, control panels, and other operational controls to ensure they are functioning correctly and responding appropriately.

Seating and Safety Equipment: Inspect the seating arrangements and safety equipment inside the lifeboat to ensure they are secure, clean, and ready for use.

Emergency Exits and Hatches: Check the emergency exits, hatches, and closure mechanisms to ensure they are operational and can be opened easily in case of an emergency.

General Cleanliness: Ensure the lifeboat is clean and free of debris, oil, or other contaminants to maintain a safe and organized environment.

15. How to test SCBA, tell me the requirement about spare of SCBA on board

Min capacity of air bottle is 1200 liters

Capable of working 30 Min with face mask

Easily adjustable safety belt of harness made of re commended fabric

Should have a pressure gauge with anti bursting orifice.

Fireproof line with a snap hook, min length 30m and should have length to reach to reach any part of the space entered.

Max. weight should not exceed 19 Kg including life line, safety belt and harness.

It should have an audible warning system when 20% of air is left in the bottle.

+ Spare Cylinder on board

100 % spare cylinders if vessel is having compressor on board that vessel must have minimum 4 SCBA sets and 4 spare cylinders not less than 1200 liters each.

200 % spare cylinders if vessel not have a compressor on board, that vessel must have 4 SCBA sets and 8 spare cylinders, not less than 1200 liters each.

16. Do you know Test GMDSS on daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly.

+ Daily test

Self test: test proper function of the Digital selective calling (DSC), check internal connection, transmitting output power and the display.

Battery Performance: Mainly the battery ON- LOAD and OFF-LOAD voltages are check by voltmeter connected to the charger.

Check all printer are in working condition and there is sufficient supply of paper.

+ Weekly test

Test the proper operation of the DSC facilities by means of a test call over one of the six distress and safety frequencies

Distress Alerting System: Test the distress alerting system, such as the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and Search and Rescue Transponder (SART), to ensure they are operational and capable of transmitting distress signals.

NAVTEX Receiver: Activate the NAVTEX receiver and check for the reception of maritime safety information broadcasts.

+ Monthly Test

EPIRB Self-test function without using the satellite system.

SART self-test mechanism to test the operation function of the Beacon.

Survival craft Two Way Portable VHF Equipment should be tested to ensure proper operation in case of a distress situation

NAVTEX function test that can test the battery, keyboard, LCD,ROM, RAM

INMARSAT perform a Diagnostic test .

GMDSS Battery connections and compartment must be checked.

17. What information you need to hand over to next OOW.

+ Navigational Information:

Current position of the vessel.

Course, speed, and planned route.

Any navigational hazards or concerns encountered during the watch.

Any ongoing navigational operations or requirements, such as course changes, speed adjustments, or anticipated encounters with other vessels.

+ Weather and Sea Conditions:

Current weather conditions, including wind speed and direction, visibility, and any significant weather changes observed during the watch.

Sea conditions, including wave height and direction.

Any weather warnings or forecasts that may impact the vessel's operations or safety.

+ Machinery and Equipment Status:

Status of main propulsion machinery, auxiliary machinery, and essential equipment, including any abnormalities or malfunctions observed during the watch.

Ongoing maintenance or repairs being carried out on machinery or equipment.

Fuel and ballast status.

+ Safety and Security Information:

Any safety concerns or incidents that occurred during the watch, including accidents, injuries, or near misses.

Security-related matters, such as unauthorized access attempts or suspicious activities.

Any changes or updates to security measures or procedures.

+ Communications and Orders:

Relevant communications received and sent during the watch, including radio messages, navigational warnings, or other notifications.

Any specific instructions or orders from the Master or other superiors that need to be passed on.

+ Miscellaneous Information:

Any significant events or incidents, such as unusual sightings, changes in vessel condition, or interactions with other vessels.

Any updates or changes to operational procedures or checklists.

18. When your vessel is sailing on the open sea, at night time, if you see two sides light (red light and green light) and

two white lights. What is your action?

In that case, this is head on situation so I will alter course to starboard side and keep to vessel passing port to port with safe distance.

19. When your vessel is sailing on the open sea, at night time, if you see one white light at a short distance, what is

the situation according to COLREG 72?

In that case, according to COLREG 72 this is over taking situation. We are vessel overtaking. So I will keep clear of the overtaken vessel.
