Winter Solstice is not just a solar term.
As one of the 24 solar terms in China, Winter Solstice is not merely a simple time marker, but carries profound cultural significance and historical heritage.
On this day, the sun shines directly on the Tropic of Capricorn, and the Northern Hemisphere experiences the shortest day and longest night of the year.
As the ancients said: "Winter Solstice is as important as the New Year."
In ancient times, Winter Solstice was even regarded as an important holiday, known as the "sub-year" festival.
Customs and Culture of Winter Solstice
1. Eating Dumplings
In northern China, there is a custom of eating dumplings, symbolizing the saying "If you don’t hold a dumpling bowl on Winter Solstice, your ears will freeze and no one will care."
This custom is said to originate from Zhang Zhongjing, the Sage of Medicine, who used dough to wrap medicinal herbs, making "Jiao'er" to treat frostbite, which gradually evolved into dumplings.
2. Eating Tangyuan
In southern China, people prefer eating tangyuan (sweet rice balls), which symbolize reunion and completeness.
The sweetness and stickiness of tangyuan not only warm the stomach but also warm the heart.
3. Ancestor Worship

Winter Solstice is also a day for ancestor worship, and many families hold rituals to honor and show respect for their ancestors.
