In Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, a man was detained after stealing a large durian from outside a fruit store, claiming he did so to treat his wife. The incident, which took place on November 6, has stirred discussion online, with many split between condemning the theft and commending his intentions as a devoted husband.

According to local reports, the man, surnamed Zhao, rode his electric scooter past a fruit shop where a large durian was displayed outside. Zhao seized the opportunity and took the fruit, valued for its unique flavor but often pricey due to its weight and rarity. When the shop owner noticed the missing durian, they reported the incident to the police.

Upon investigation, officers traced the missing durian to Zhao’s home, and the scent of the pungent fruit was detectable as soon as they opened his garage door. Zhao admitted to stealing the durian, explaining it was intended as a special treat for his wife. However, despite his seemingly affectionate gesture, Zhao was detained for seven days under administrative custody for theft.

The incident has sparked a range of reactions on Chinese social media. Some netizens condemned Zhao’s actions, emphasizing that theft is illegal, regardless of his intentions. “Stealing is still a crime, no matter how you justify it,” one user wrote. Others expressed sympathy, pointing out that durians are costly, and Zhao may have simply wanted to show his care in a way he could afford. “He just wanted to make his wife happy. I hope he learns from this but also receives some understanding,” another user commented.

Some also saw a humorous side, with one user saying, “This man’s dedication is admirable, but he really picked the wrong way to show it!” Another added, “His intentions were good, but he still broke the law. Being a ‘good husband’ doesn’t exempt him from consequences.”
