Nanjing resident Wang Nuannuan, the real-life inspiration behind the film Lost in the Stars, is still unable to divorce her husband nearly five years after he pushed her off a cliff. The shocking 2019 incident occurred while Wang was five months pregnant. Miraculously, she survived the 34-meter fall in Thailand and was rescued.
In June 2023, a Thai court sentenced Wang’s husband, Yu Mou-dong, to 33 years and 4 months in prison for attempted murder. Three months later, Wang filed for divorce, yet the process has been riddled with legal obstacles. Her lawyer revealed that, under current procedures, the court may delay the divorce trial until Yu completes his prison sentence and returns to China. By that time, Wang could be nearly 70 years old.
Legal experts explain that divorce cases in China typically require both parties to appear in court. However, Yu's imprisonment in Thailand poses significant challenges for delivering court documents and ensuring his participation. Although Wang’s case has no direct domestic precedent, some experts suggest exploring creative solutions. For instance, under China’s Civil Procedure Law, courts can issue a default judgment if a defendant refuses to appear in court without valid justification. The key question is whether Yu’s imprisonment constitutes a valid reason for delaying the case.
Currently, Qinhuai District Court in Nanjing has referred Wang’s case to higher judicial authorities for guidance. They are awaiting feedback from the Supreme People’s Court on how to proceed.
Wang’s plight has drawn widespread attention and sparked debate online. Many netizens are outraged by the legal delays, arguing that Wang deserves closure after enduring such a traumatic experience. “Why should a victim have to wait decades for justice? This is adding insult to injury,” one commenter wrote. Others urged the legal system to prioritize her case and set a precedent for similar situations.
Despite her ordeal, Wang has expressed her determination to move forward with her life and ensure her daughter grows up in a safe and loving environment. Her case continues to highlight the complexities of cross-border legal disputes and the need for reforms to better protect victims of domestic violence.
