Tokyo police have arrested a 22-year-old South Korean student from Hosei University for attacking eight classmates with a hammer in an alleged premeditated assault.
The incident occurred Friday afternoon during an economics lecture at the university’s Tama campus in Machida, Tokyo, where around 150 students were present. The suspect, a second-year student, reportedly carried a metal hammer weighing approximately 360 grams and about 30 centimeters long, concealed in her jacket pocket.
According to authorities, about 10 minutes into the class, the suspect left her seat in the third row, walked to the back of the classroom, and struck two students seated in the last row before attacking six others. The victims - five male and three female students - sustained minor injuries to their heads and arms.
The suspect told investigators she took the hammer from another classroom earlier that morning, suggesting the act was planned. She reportedly claimed that she had been bullied daily and felt “looked down upon” by her classmates, believing that hitting them was the only way to resolve her situation.
Police are treating the attack as premeditated and are continuing their investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident.
