Q&A

Who can choose this course?
Anyone who is interested may participate. The course is mainly aimed at Chinese students who are interested in philosophy.
Previous knowledge of Heidegger's philosophy is helpful but not necessary. The course begins with a general introduction to Heidegger's philosophy. The course consists of reading the text "The Origin of the Work of Art" (74 pages) together in English - about 8 pages to be read per week. I will explain and comment on the text.

Do I have to buy the texts?
Task for all participants: read 8 pages of Heidegger each week.
The text and additional materials (e.g. secondary literature) will be provided.

How does the course work?
The course begins with two lectures as an introduction to Heidegger's philosophy. This is followed by 8 sessions in which we talk about the text for 45 and read for 45 minutes. I speak very slowly and present a PowerPoint presentation where you can read the main points.

Wechat Group: All participants join a WeChat group where questions about philosophy can be asked at any time. I will ask questions about the text in the WeChat group myself which should help you with the text and guide you through by pointing to the most important points.

What do I get out of these courses?
Why should I spend money on these courses?

1. Relevance:
Martin Heidegger is considered one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century. Heidegger's philosophy is world famous. Especially in China, there is a very great interest in Heidegger.
2. Relevance²:
This text ("The Origin of the Work of Art") is considered one of the most important texts for Heidegger's philosophy. It was written in the 1930s and marks the "turning point" of Heidegger's philosophy. The text itself had a very strong influence on aesthetics and on hermeneutics (Gadamer).
3. Relevance³:
The text is important reading for anyone interested in art (aesthetics).
4. Interactive: An online course is better than a video because the course is interactive: you can always ask your own questions and join in the discussion. The course thus becomes "individual" for you and has answers to your own questions.
5. Social Group, Shared Interest, Motivation: you can talk and discuss with like-minded people - this exercises your communication skills and is fun. The discussio(n takes place in the virtual meetings and in the WeChat group and is guided and controlled.

More courses on Western philosophy will follow. Those who participate well (ask questions, join in the discussion, answer questions) get a discount on the next courses. This is all part of the greater project of building a Heidegger-Academy in 2024/2025 - with more courses on Heidegger and Philosophy, Teaching German, Lectures by famous Scholars, and Reading Clubs.

Course content (more detailed):
Martin Heidegger "The Origin of the Work of Art" (1931-1936)
he text deals with Heidegger's answer to the question of what art is. We will learn from Heidegger what makes a work of art a work of art.
Heidegger gave lectures on this subject in 1935-36. The text is an extended version of these lectures (74 pages in total). In the text, Heidegger presents his entirely new understanding of art. Neither sociology, psychology, nor aesthetics are primarily important for Heidegger's understanding of art - instead, Heidegger says, the work of art is an "event of truth".
The text also marks the "Kehre" of Heidegger's thinking. The "Kehre" stands for the change within Heidegger's early philosophy to his late philosophy. From this text, we can learn what the Kehre (turning) is and what actually changed in Heidegger's philosophy. The text is therefore also considered an introduction to Heidegger's late philosophy and is regarded as one of Heidegger's most important texts.
Heidegger's Kunstwerk essay had a great influence on the hermeneutic tradition - especially on Gadamer, who further developed Heidegger's approaches in Truth and Method. The text also had an impact on aesthetics because Heidegger proposed a whole new way of thinking about works of art.
So on the one hand, the text is considered a central text for Heidegger's philosophy; on the other hand, it is important reading for all questions regarding aesthetics.
We put Heidegger's thoughts on art to the test and discuss together whether Heidegger's conception of what art is is useful. We read this text to learn about Heidegger's philosophy and about art.
