A 20-year-old father was sentenced Monday to 70 years in prison for killing his infant daughter nearly a year ago.
Hunter Waters was to go to trial Monday on charges of murder and aggravated battery in connection with the death of his daughter, 2-month-old Addison Waters, on Nov. 26, 2023.
But instead, he opted for a plea agreement with Tazewell County prosecutors that saw other counts of first-degree murder and the aggravated battery charges dismissed.
He must serve 100% of his prison term, meaning that will about 10 months already served, he could get out of when he’s well into his 80s. He also must register as a violent offender against youths, according to the court order.
Without the deal, he would have faced up to 100 years behind bars.
He is eligible, however, for parole. State law allows anyone who is under 21 to have a parole review after serving 20 years of their sentence.
According to court records, Walters’ daughter died from “catastrophic brain injuries.” The infant had a fractured skull, broken ribs and severe injuries all over her body consistent with child abuse.
Waters allegedly told Pekin police that he had grown frustrated and felt overwhelmed with his daughter’s crying. He admitted to “handling her roughly while changing her diaper, striking her head on a changing table.
