A man in central China sparked a heated debate on parenting after publicly tying up his teenage son due to the boy’s poor performance in school. The incident occurred in Hunan province, where the father, a migrant worker, had traveled over 1,000 kilometers from Zhejiang to confront his son after receiving complaints from the boy’s teachers about his frequent absences and declining academic performance.

The altercation, captured on video and widely circulated online, showed the father attempting to restrain his son with ropes as the boy resisted, unwilling to accompany him to the police station for discipline. According to local media reports, the father was frustrated by his son’s behavior, which included skipping classes, loitering, and developing habits like smoking, drinking, and gambling.

Witnesses reported that the father had reached his limit and felt drastic measures were necessary to correct his son’s behavior. The situation escalated in front of a local store, where the shop owner shared that the boy had been on the verge of dropping out of school for some time.

When police arrived at the scene, they mediated the dispute, speaking with both father and son. Eventually, they allowed the pair to leave, with officers emphasizing the importance of the boy continuing his education, as mandated by China’s nine-year compulsory education system.

The incident quickly gained attention on Chinese social media platforms like Douyin, where netizens were divided on the father’s approach. Some praised him for taking responsibility and intervening, while others expressed concern that such extreme actions might push the boy further away. One commenter remarked, “You can bind his body, but not his heart,” reflecting the challenges parents face in disciplining rebellious teenagers.
