In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked the city of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, two lives were lost in a freak accident at the Cujin Wanda Plaza on September 21, 2023. The Wuhou District branch of the Chengdu Public Security Bureau released a statement early on September 22, detailing the tragic event.
According to the police report, at approximately 7:44 PM, a 37-year-old woman, identified only as Ms. Luo, climbed over a protective barrier on the third floor of the shopping complex and fell. In a cruel twist of fate, her fall ended on the second basement level, where she struck a 70-year-old passerby, Ms. Li, from Nanbu County, Sichuan Province. Despite immediate emergency response efforts, both women were pronounced dead at the scene.
The police investigation revealed that Ms. Luo had a history of bipolar disorder and had previously received hospital treatment for her condition. She was reportedly still on medication at the time of the incident.
This tragic event has sparked intense discussion on Chinese social media platforms. Many netizens expressed their condolences for both victims, with particular sympathy for Ms. Li, the elderly bystander who became an unwitting victim.
One commenter wrote, "This is truly heartbreaking. Two families have been devastated in an instant." Another added, "Mental health issues need to be taken more seriously in our society. This tragedy might have been preventable with proper support and intervention."
Questions are also being raised about safety measures at the shopping plaza. "How was she able to climb over the barrier so easily? Are the safety precautions adequate?" one concerned citizen asked.
