On Sunday, 5,000 Chinese couples were married simultaneously in 50 locations across the country in a large-scale celebration leading up to the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Themed "A Celebration by Families and the Nation to Witness Happiness Together."
Held at 50 venues across China, the couples donned traditional Chinese wedding gowns, exchanged flowers and gifts, and solemnly read their wedding vows. According to China Women's News, the newlyweds also issued a joint proposal advocating for simpler wedding procedures and opposing the practice of high betrothal gifts.
The group wedding carries symbolic significance, promoting marriage customs reform, encouraging simpler weddings, and fostering family happiness. A couple from Ji'an, Jiangxi Province, shared with the media that true marriage lies in love and commitment, while high "caili" (betrothal gifts) often burden young couples and impact their happiness. This sentiment was echoed by a bride, Yan Huiyin, from Heilongjiang Province, who emphasized that finding a soulmate is the most important aspect of marriage.
Demographic expert He Yafu explained that one factor contributing to China's declining marriage rate is the high cost of weddings, particularly in rural areas where the tradition of high "caili" is more prevalent. He noted that the purpose of this group wedding is to reform outdated customs, promote simplified wedding practices, and reduce the financial strain of marriage.
The largest gathering occurred in Inner Mongolia, where 300 couples participated in the ceremony. Overall, the event highlights the push towards modernizing marriage customs and making weddings more affordable, while celebrating love and unity across the nation.
