Non Architecture

SUMMARY

We can consider “architecture” everything that has already been designed and/or built. That would define a realm of conventional solutions, often repeated in a self-referential system. We imagined a counterpart, a “non architecture”. A world of unexplored designs and countless possibilities, that if found, could enlarge and change permanently the boundaries of architecture. A universe of chances and opportunities never challenged by architects before. A limitless field of investigation that includes everything that is not architecture, yet.

Non Architecture Competitions aims to find unconventional and unexplored design solutions in the field of architecture. The second phase of competitions is structured in 9+1 themes: a Research Ecosystem with the purpose of exploring each theme from different perspectives. All competitions have their focus on tackling the big issues of tomorrow, by seeking nontraditional approaches in the architect’s work.

Vertical Farm is one of the Non Architecture “Produce-Waste” Competitions.

In this competition, we encourage participants to come up with visionary concepts for a vertical farm in the urban context - only 1 drawing, absolute freedom of scale.

Designers are asked to design a vertical farm integrated into the urban fabric, while providing a sustainable solution. By focusing on the food production in the urban environment, designers can also come up with innovative and creative solutions to problems such as space limitations and environmental degradation.

Urbanization is rapidly changing the face of our cities, and with it, the challenges in producing food for a growing population.  Vertical farming offers a uniquesolution to these challenges by utilizing limited urban space to produce crops in a sustainable and efficient manner.  This competition aims to inspire architects and designers to develop innovative and visionary designs for vertical farms within the urban context.

How can the design of the vertical farm maximize crop yields and minimize environmental impact? What technologies and materials should be used to make the vertical farm sustainable and efficient?  How can the vertical farm be integrated into the existing urban fabric?

Vertical Farm aims to answer those questions with a particular focus on food production in the urban context.

Non Architecture

BRIEF IN SHORT

Non Architecture and all the supporting organizations collaborated in identifying a range of 30 design issues related to the research theme of Produce-Waste.

We ask participants to select a maximum of 5 keywords to explain their design. Keywords can be

picked from our list or they can be proposed by the design team.

Participants are free to propose a vertical farm in the most bold and creative way possible, by acknowledging the needs of the city and contribute to a sustainable future. Designers should take into consideration the advances in technology, the exploration of sustainable systems, and the establishment of new urban and architectural methods to bring food production into the urban context.

It is up to the participants to choose the materials, colour, esthetic and the type of vertical farm they want to develop.

The proposal must be set within the limits of the selected plot. Participants are free to design around, replacing or repurposing the existing building. The design should not exceed the limits of the plot.

There is no maximum height defined, no restrictions for underground construction and no minimum distance requirement from the road or neighbouring buildings.

Designers must propose a vertical farm. Any accessory facilities or functions are up to the contestant.

A graphic scale of the drawing must be indicated in the submitted image in some way.

SITE INTRODUCTION

For the purpose of this competition, we’ve defined the area of interest to be the Millennium Mills, located in the Royal Docks, London.

The Millennium Mills is a former flour mill located in the Royal Docks area of London, UK. The building was constructed in 1905 and was one of the largest flour mills in the world, operating for over a century. After the decline of the milling industry, the building fell into disuse and was abandoned for several decades. Despite its derelict state, the Millennium Mills is considered to be a landmark building in London's industrial heritage.

The building's location, size, and history make it an attractive proposition for new projects, and is seen as a key part of the ongoing regeneration of the Royal Docks area.
