At the end of 2017, our studio settled in the Academic Park. The building had been idle for many years, and every time we passed by, we would peer through the door crack, thinking how nice it would be to work here—so close to home! This “anticipation” has been with us ever since we dreamed of establishing our studio!
Perhaps the wish we sent to the universe was heard? A year after we founded our studio, we truly realized this wish by establishing our roots here. We’ve been here for seven years. In 2023, due to the serious aging of the building, we decided to indulge ourselves and gave it a comprehensive renovation!
“A design studio nestled in the park” perfectly aligns with our pursuit: a natural space, a flowing environment—this embodies both the office atmosphere we desire and our design aspirations. Every person seeking a beautiful life has a “paradise” in their heart, and we strive to reflect our pastoral dreams in reality. This may manifest as a place, an attitude, or a combination of both, and by this standard, we have already fulfilled our wishes.
We restructured the original building, using clean lines to outline two boxes: one large, one small; one solid, one void; one still, one dynamic; one introverted, one extroverted. The “large box” serves as our workspace and discussion area, primarily for internal collaboration; the “small box” is reserved for receiving visitors and presenting projects, handling most external affairs of the studio.
The corridor between the two boxes is open to the sky. Birds can curiously visit, raindrops can stubbornly patter on this little space, snowflakes can softly fall, and autumn leaves can come with the wind, bringing us the first love letter of autumn.
On days with bad weather, as we move between the two spaces, we often feel a playful spirit, akin to facing a challenge. The best way to embrace this challenge is to take a huge stride, quickly switch spaces, and when we safely enter the interior, the familiarity and sense of security wash over us—what a delightful experience!
The façade of the renovated building features fiber cement panels. These panels have a self-cleaning function, making maintenance easier; the irregularity of the surface enriches the white structure, and the changing light makes the entire façade seem to dance in the sunlight.
The transformed space has expanded the source of natural light, and the large doors and windows have become the focal point of the interior. Should we have a continuous modern floor-to-ceiling window, or steel windows with a hint of vintage style? After several comparisons, we chose the Daylight steel windows. This latticework of crisscrossing grids radiates its unique tenacity! The black lines frame the exterior views into small planets, and when looked at as a whole, it resembles a glimpse into the entire “universe,” which is the small universe of Jimu Design: natural, dynamic, vibrant, ever-evolving with the passage of time... always possessing a unique aesthetic!
The interior style complements the building’s exterior and surrounding environment—pure, natural, featuring MCM-style furnishings and decor imbued with a rebellious spirit. Our design resonates with the essence sought by vintage aesthetics, which is: “form should always follow function.”
We share lunch and afternoon tea on the first floor, select material samples, finalize furniture fabrics, receive some visitors, and meditate or relax here... In this relatively small space, we capture various aspects of our work environment, making it a hub of happiness!
A spiral staircase connects the first and second floors. Ascending the stairs leads us into a more private, quiet space. Several computers, a few chairs, some blueprints, and project schedules—nothing else beyond this. Here, we can filter out many distractions, focus on the present, and often encounter that vital state of “flow.” For creators, this state of flow is incredibly important, and in this pure space, it seems to come to us effortlessly.
Different spaces have different needs; different users have varied expectations. By considering the external environment, we hope this building can blend seamlessly with the vibrant life of the park and provide positive feedback to the surroundings, contributing a small amount of energy to the city's aesthetic communication. On every overtime night, the warm lights filtering through the windows may offer some comfort to those returning home.
“Building blocks” represent beautiful childhood memories and boundless creativity. They accompanied us in creating our first three-dimensional house as children, allowing for infinite stacking and free combinations, without rules or boundaries. “Block Space Design” will be like your childhood building blocks: accompanying you, fulfilling your imagination, and satisfying your individuality. Together, we will construct a beautiful new home for life.
