The Wines of Germany China 10 Years Anniversary Award Ceremony took place at the Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai. The special awards for the 10th anniversary from 2015 to 2025 were revealed. The "Riesling Fellowship" award was presented in mainland for the first time. Ms. Shenghan Wang, the founder of "Lady Penguin", the well-known wine content e-commerce brand, and Mr. Yang Lu, China's first Master Sommelier, won this award in recognition of their outstanding contributions to driving the Chinese market appreciation of German Riesling.

The "Riesling Fellowship" is an individual award first established by the German Wine Institute in 2007. As of now, there are in total 33 "Riesling Fellows" worldwide. They represent the world's preeminent German Riesling experts and advocates, including industry professionals, journalists, writers and critics, such as Jancis Robinson and Hugh Johnson, the authors of "The World Atlas of Wine", famous wine critic Stuart Pigott, and Master of Wine Fongyee Walker.

Before this, there were only 5 Riesling fellows in Asia. The awarding of Ms. Shenghan Wang and Mr. Yang Lu marks a new stage in the promotion of German Riesling in the Chinese market. Through their years of unremitting efforts, they have greatly enhanced the popularity and influence of German Riesling among Chinese consumers.

The wine content e-commerce and cultural community brand "Lady Penguin" founded by Ms. Shenghan Wang enjoys over 5 million followers across the entire network and more than 600,000 subscribers. German Riesling has always been a best-selling item on the " Lady Penguin " platform. Through German Riesling themed vlogs and co-branded products in cooperation with German wineries, Shenghan Wang has significantly increased the popularity of German Riesling among consumers and helped many novice wine drinkers fall in love with it.

“Thank you so much for the great affirmation from Wines of Germany China. It's so significant that I'll have to redouble my efforts to promote German Riesling in the future. The most crucial reason why Riesling can succeed in the Chinese market is that, it has captured the core women consumers. Coincidentally, in my opinion, the name "Riesling (Lei Si Ling in Chinese pronunciation)" can best embody the charm of contemporary women. The first two characters "Lei Si" are pronounced the same as "lace" in Chinese, representing the softness of women, just like the light and sweet floral Riesling; while the last two characters "Si Ling" in Chinese means commander, showing the resolute temperament of women, like the Riesling with a prominent acidity and a strong sense of minerality. Is there any other variety that can express this combination of softness and toughness more vividly? May the characteristics of Riesling inspire more women, and may each of us here witness the boundless prospects of German Riesling in the Chinese market.”

——Shenghan Wang

Mr. Yang Lu is the world's first Chinese Master Sommelier. He is also the founder of Grapea & Co. Wine Academy and the founder of Topsomm Sommelier Service Consulting. He spares no effort to promote the high quality and diversity of German Riesling in wine education and for sommeliers, making great contributions to enhancing the influence of German Riesling in the wine industry.

"A few years ago, I was interviewed by a wine media who asked me to describe myself with one grape variety, I blurted out "Riesling" without hesitation. The reason was that I considered myself a honest and genuine person, and it’s challenging to work with me, sharing the same traits as Riesling. At that time, still being young and naive, I thought likening myself to Riesling was a compliment to Riesling. With life going on and I went through the ups and downs, I found out it’s extremely difficult to stay honest, stay genuine to my original aspiration as a great Riesling. I finally understand that when I compare myself to ‘Riesling’, it wasn't a compliment to Riesling but rather to myself. Therefore, I'm super honored and immensely proud to become ‘Riesling Fellow’. I wish everyone, in the spirit of ‘Riesling’, to stay honest, stay genuine. "

——Yang Lu

The promotion of German wine has reached a new milestone. Sincere congratulations are extended to the two new "Riesling Fellows"! This honor is not only a recognition of their excellent work but also an encouragement for their continued journey ahead. It is hoped that they will continue to contribute to the promotion of German wine and let more Chinese consumers experience the unique charm of German Riesling.
