Robert van der Hilst:

Shanghai: Time & Timeless 1990-1993

Fotografiska 2F / C

‘Shanghai: Time & Timeless 1990-1993’ presents the photographs taken during Robert van der Hilst’s several visits to Shanghai between 1990 and 1993. In these images, the Oriental Pearl Tower in Lujiazui had just broken ground, young as bamboo shoot, the commercial skyscrapers began to stand in solitude among the dense low-rise shikumen and shantytowns.

Some streets had been ripped open for revamp while the old Nanjing Road waited for its modern-day remodeling. Foot traffic and car traffic intertwined, passing by huge hand-painted posters on the roadsides depicting people’s hopes for a better life.

The exhibition bears witness to Shanghai’s development and transformation amidst the opportunities of the times, preserving the snapshots of the urban landscape and moments of local citizen’s life during its economic leap and development takeoff. It vividly brings back to life an era filled with change and vitality.

02

Viviane Sassen

PHOSPHOR: Art&Fashion 1990-2023

Fotografiska 2F / B

The exhibition brings together for the first time Sassen’s most emblematic series, including 'Umbra', 'Lexicon' and 'Flamboya' as well as unseen archival material, mixed-media works, and incorporates photography, painting, collage, video, and editorial fashion production.

03

Marco Brambilla: Double Feature

Fotografiska 1F / A

Double Feature echoes the nostalgic practice of a long discontinued motion picture industry phenomenon; the programming of two films instead of the modern single-feature screening. The exhibition unveils two extraordinary pieces that showcase Brambilla's mastery of visual storytelling and digital art through his Megaplex series; Heaven’s Gate (2022) and King Size (2023).

Marco Brambilla is both an artist and a full-feature film director, an experience which he gained while working in Hollywood and which now transpires in much of his further artist work.

04

Liu Shiyuan: CRISPR Whisper

Fotografiska 3F / D

The exhibition brings the five series artworks from the artist’s earlier creation to the latest works. Within the multi-layered chaotic arena she constructs, we are invited not only to re-examine how images shape perceptions and implicit biases but also to delve into the multifaceted meanings and latent attributes of these images in contemporary society.

Liu Shiyuan's works deconstruct and reassemble images down to pixels and video stills, the fundamental units of contemporary visual communication.
