A man’s routine visit to the doctor turned into a nightmare after physicians discovered that his penis was turning to bone, as detailed in a study published in Urology Case Reports.
The unnamed patient, who was in his 60s, had reported to the doctor’s office for “a trauma of the knee,” per the study. During the visit, he also alerted medics of a pain in his penis.
Upon examination, physicians didn’t find any prostate swelling, unusual discharge or any of the usual markers of phallic agony, so they conducted an X-ray to look for possible pelvic fractures.
The images revealed a hard truth: the patient had “extensive, plaque-like calcification” along the length of his manhood.
Doctors diagnosed the poor soul with penile ossification, in which calcium salts amass in the organ’s tissues, forming an extraskeletal structure much like a bone.
With this diagnosis, the patient become one of just 40 patients to be diagnosed with the condition.
Despite this anomaly down under, the man declined further examination or treatment of the penile petrification, which is generally remedied via topical medicines, injections or oral painkillers.
The condition can also be treated through shockwave therapy, where doctors use sonic pulses to break down the calcified mass.
The patient’s abrupt departure left the cause of his calcified phallus unclear. However, medics believe he could have suffered from Peyronie’s disease, a condition that causes the penis to inflame and form scar tissue.
The hardened plaque reduces flexibility and can cause the phallus to curve during an erection or appear shorter when erect.
This can lead to erectile dysfunction or pain during erections.
Other possible causes include metabolic disorders, late-stage kidney disease, repeated trauma to the penis and even sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and syphilis.
