A Beijing woman, Xiaoli recently discovered that her privacy had been violated during a spa visit, leading to a heated confrontation with the business owner. The incident, reported on December 24, occurred in Guangdong province and quickly gained public attention.
According to Xiaoli, she and two friends had booked a full-body nude spa session at a local massage parlor. To their shock, the spa owner secretly filmed their exposed backs and buttocks without consent and uploaded the footage to her WeChat Moments to promote the business. The video was accompanied by a caption boasting about the spa’s popularity: “Look how busy our spa is - three sisters visiting together!”
Upon seeing the video, Xiaoli immediately contacted the spa owner, demanding its removal. However, the owner dismissed her concerns, claiming such videos were common and not inappropriate. Xiaoli firmly disagreed, arguing that sharing such private footage without consent was not only unethical but also a violation of privacy.
“If you think this is acceptable, why don’t you walk around the streets naked?” Xiaoli retorted during their exchange.
Facing Xiaoli’s persistence, the spa owner initially downplayed the situation as an “unintentional mistake” but refused to apologize. To Xiaoli’s dismay, the video remained online for over 16 minutes after her initial complaint, prompting her to send multiple follow-ups demanding its deletion.
When the owner continued to refuse an apology or immediate action, Xiaoli and her friends retaliated by leaving negative reviews about the spa on a popular online platform. Enraged by the reviews, the owner offered each of them 500 yuan to delete their comments - a proposal Xiaoli staunchly rejected.
Further confrontation revealed that the owner’s phone contained numerous similar videos of other female clients in vulnerable situations. Under Xiaoli’s pressure, the owner finally deleted the video featuring Xiaoli and her friends but made no effort to apologize or address other potential violations.
Xiaoli refused to remove her negative review, stating that the spa owner’s actions clearly breached ethical and legal boundaries. “She knows very well that posting such videos without consent is wrong. This is not ignorance - it’s blatant disregard for others’ privacy,” Xiaoli commented.
