A newly married man in China has captured the hearts of social media users with his story of enduring a six-hour daily commute to be with his wife. The man, Lin Shu, 31, has been making a 320-kilometer round-trip from his office in Qingdao to his home in Weifang, both located in Shandong province.
Lin shared his daily journey on Douyin, dubbing it “the longest commute distance.” His routine begins at 5:00 am when he wakes up and starts his journey at 5:20 am on an e-bike. He reaches the train station within 30 minutes and boards a train at 6:15 am. After arriving in Qingdao at 7:46 am, he takes a 15-minute subway ride to his office, giving him some time for breakfast before starting work at 9:00 am.
After a full day at work, Lin embarks on the three to four-hour journey back home to Weifang. This demanding schedule is a result of the couple's decision to buy a flat in Weifang, providing his wife with a “sense of security” as it is her hometown.
Lin mentioned that this rigorous commuting routine is temporary. His wife is currently looking for a job in Qingdao, and they plan to move there if she secures one. Lin doesn’t find the commute difficult due to “the convenience of intercity transport.”
The story of Lin’s dedication has garnered widespread praise on social media. His videos have amassed over seven million views on Douyin. “Six hours a day. He must love his wife very much,” commented one user. Another noted, “Commuting must cost him around 1,600 yuan (US$220) every month.”
While some users marveled at Lin’s commitment, others pointed out that long commutes are not uncommon in China. “There are so many people who travel so far every day who work in Beijing and live in Tianjin or Hebei,” one person remarked.
