A 20-year-old woman in China was tragically murdered by her step-grandfather after she refused to give him money. The case, heard by the Yuncheng Intermediate People's Court in Shanxi province on September 12, has shocked many across the country.

The accused, a 62-year-old man surnamed Zhang, was charged with intentional homicide for strangling his step-granddaughter in February. According to the victim’s younger sister, Zhang visited their home early on February 22, demanding money. When his request was denied, he attacked the young woman, using an electric wire to shock her mouth and chest before strangling her to death.

The victim’s sister, who is 18, recounted how Zhang lingered at their home for more than 10 minutes after committing the crime. She revealed that their mother had passed away three years earlier in a road accident, and both sisters were living off a compensation fund. Zhang had been demanding tens of thousands of yuan in the week leading up to the attack, claiming he needed it to buy a farm.

“My sister and I depended on each other after our parents died, and now she’s gone,” the younger sister shared, devastated by the loss. The victim was a second-year university student, with a promising future cut short.

This heinous crime has outraged social media users in China. One Weibo user commented, "How could someone be so cruel?" Another lamented the younger sister’s tragic situation, noting that she has now lost her entire immediate family.
