KFC Canada has announced a major shift in its menu offerings, revealing plans to introduce Halal certified chicken across its Ontario locations starting May 15, 2024. This move, which includes the discontinuation of pork products, reflects the company’s commitment to providing inclusive menu options for all its customers.
In a letter addressed to community leaders, KFC Canada outlined the steps taken to ensure a smooth transition to Halal certification. All chicken products, including chicken on the bone, tenders, popcorn chicken, sandwiches, and wings, will meet Halal standards. The decision also involves ceasing the sale of pork items at all KFC locations.
To support this initiative, KFC Canada has partnered with Maple Lodge Farms, the producer of Canada’s top Halal brand, Zabiha Halal. Maple Lodge Farms brings extensive experience in delivering Halal products to the Muslim community. Additionally, Ontario restaurant staff have undergone training on Halal operational procedures, and KFC Canada has collaborated closely with its Muslim team members to facilitate the rollout.
Luqman Rabbani, KFC Canada’s R&D and Operations Manager, emphasized the company’s dedication to inclusivity and customer satisfaction. "This initiative is a testament to our commitment to providing diverse and inclusive menu options for all our customers," he stated.
The introduction of Halal certified chicken will begin in Ontario and is expected to expand to the rest of Canada by the end of the year.
The announcement has sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Many netizens have praised KFC Canada for its inclusive approach. One Twitter user commented, "This is a great step towards inclusivity. Kudos to KFC for recognizing the needs of its diverse customer base." Another user expressed, "I'm excited to try the new Halal options. It’s about time we had more choices."
However, not all reactions were positive. Some customers voiced concerns over the removal of pork products. "I understand the move to Halal, but I’ll miss the pork items," one Facebook user noted. Another added, "I hope KFC finds a way to cater to all dietary preferences."
