A 30-year-old Chinese national, Jiang Yangbo, was sentenced to seven months in prison for stealing a credit card from a fellow passenger during a flight to Singapore. The incident occurred on May 16 aboard AirAsia flight AK719 from Kuala Lumpur. Jiang removed a blue laptop bag belonging to Jin Chengjie, a 36-year-old passenger seated in front of him, from the overhead compartment. He discreetly took Jin’s Citibank credit card and placed it in his pocket before returning the bag to its original spot.
Another passenger sitting in the same row observed the suspicious behavior and notified Jin after the plane landed at Changi Airport. Jin immediately canceled the card. Sensing he had been caught, Jiang tossed the stolen card back into the overhead compartment, where it was later discovered by another passenger. Fortunately, the card had not been misused.
Authorities were alerted, and Jiang was arrested upon arrival at the airport. In addition to the stolen card, Jiang’s sling bag contained various currencies, his passport, and three other credit cards.
Singapore police emphasized their zero-tolerance policy towards theft aboard aircraft and urged passengers to keep their valuables close by rather than in overhead compartments. Passengers are also encouraged to report any suspicious activity to cabin crew during flights. Jiang’s case serves as a reminder of the potential legal consequences of such actions.
